Underwriting Supervisor

Job Summary:

The Underwriting Supervisor is responsible for the management of Underwriting, including profitable risk selection and production support. Directly manages the Team workload to ensure service standards are met. Manages risk selection in assigned states based on guidelines to ensure growth and profitability. Builds and maintains good agency relationships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manages, develops, and directs activities of the team to achieve Company portfolio management objectives and financial plans, including new business, retention, policies in force growth and optimization, and loss ratio

improvement.
• Actively works to improve the ease of doing business & eliminates obstacles to doing business with the Company.
• Trains and supports the team on new processes, procedures, systems, and guidelines.
• Coordinates underwriting related system changes.
• Ensures proper staffing levels are always maintained to achieve expectations, while actively working to improve efficiencies, operate within the department budget and lower costs.
• Uses discretion and independent judgment to make decisions and resolve operational issues.
• Actively participates in the daily management of the department, including involvement in performance reviews and disciplinary actions/plans.
• Communicates job expectations by planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
• Builds and maintains effective relationships with agents and vendors. Travels to agent or vendor locales as needed.
• Defines and implements underwriting strategy and operational policies for responsible product lines.
• Oversees the review and approval process for recommendations on complex cases.
• Ensures compliance with risk selection criteria and underwriting guidelines; oversees new business, endorsement, and renewal/nonrenewal processing; ensures proper use of underwriting authority.
• Develops the Company response to requests from State Departments of Insurance, the Better Business Bureau, and other agencies.
• Implements and facilitates profitability initiatives and quality objectives.
• Actively participates as a subject matter expert on cross-functional teams supporting corporate initiatives as needed.
• Communicates with co-workers, management, clients, vendors, and others as needed in a courteous and professional manner.
• Maintains the integrity of the company and products offered by complying with federal and state regulations as well as company policies and procedures.
• May handle special projects and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree preferred. Applicable experience may substitute for some of the education requirements.
• 5 or more years of progressive Property and Casualty underwriting or related experience including claims, agency, etc.
• Ability to translate quantitative and qualitative metrics (unit economics) into decision making and critical thinking.
• Ability to travel to agent, vendor, or conference locales.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners.
• Ability to use discretion, critical thinking, and independent judgment to resolve issues and improve processes.
• Ability to successfully multi-task.
