SUMMARY: The Manager - Research Nurse Oncology reports to the Director, Brown University Health Oncology Clinical Research (LOCR). Under general supervision coordinates the research activities, across all Brown University Health Cancer Institute sites, provided by department professional nursing staff. The role includes oversight of all clinical activities related to the research conduct inclusive of but not limited to: oversight of Nurse Practitioner, research nurses, research nurse coordinators, identification, recruitment and follow up of patients participating in clinical research studies. In collaboration with physicians and other members of the health care team, promotes, explains and assists in the implementation of clinical research studies. Collects data, monitors programs and assures adherence to established protocols. May coordinate clinical trails data collection involving research teams from other institutions. Participates in analysis of data and in preparation of papers for publication. RESPONSIBILITIES: Uses benchmark and best practice data to identify core components of professional nursing practice in the oncology research arena. Implements a best practice model in the department and ensures nursing practice meets the standard. Develops policies and procedures which validate best practice, reviews policies annually for benchmark data and monitors research activities to ensure compliance. Participates in the identification of quality metrics for the department with particular focus on the integrity of the nursing process in clinical research. Interviews, selects, evaluates and provides guidance to research nursing, other professional staff and related clerical support personnel. Directs work of subordinates to gather data and to prepare and maintain records for research investigatory studies. Assists research physicians in identifying patients meeting criteria for inclusion in specific clinical research studies. Assures all requirements for protocol eligibility are met. Contacts appropriate attending physicians to explain study and gain cooperation. Following established guidelines, obtains patients’ informed consent; may write forms specific to individual studies submit to Patient Protection Committee for approval. Establishes study record for each participant, abstracting pertinent information from medical record. Monitors adherence to protocol through review of patient records, data collection sheets and through regular contact with patient and members of the health care team. May prepare schema appropriate to specific study protocol depicting concise criteria for use in monitoring process. Alerts physicians when laboratory studies, follow up data, etc. are due. Abstracts information from data collection sheets to determine response to treatment and to identify abnormalities or problems associated with treatment protocols. Alerts appropriate health care and/or research team members as necessary. May make recommendations to the research physician regarding revision of protocols, assessment and report of on-going studies and review of new proposals. Maintains liaison with pharmaceutical companies, clinical centers and other participants in the study projects to gather and exchange information. May serve as central resource to coordinate research data collection from multiple outside institutions participating in related investigatory studies. Assures timely and accurate receipt and processing of information for analysis by investigators. May research literature to assess related findings and to assist in writing papers for publication. May perform duties of Research Nurse as required, with direct patient contact to administer drugs, obtain specimens, perform EKG’s or related assessment or care functions. Maintains and enhances professional expertise through participation in appropriate educational activities. Sets strategic vision for area according to standards of excellence as foundation for practice. Designs strategies to support organizational goals. Sets unit-based goals and objectives consistent with overall departmental and institutional perspective. Monitors progress toward goal attainment. Schedules regular nursing meetings for all levels of personnel, e.g. research nurse, research nurse coordinators, and nurse practitioners for the purpose of providing the employee with owner information, updates on the progress and direction of the hospital and Brown University Health and day-to-day operational information. Responsible to develop employees to their fullest work potential by identifying educational opportunities and unit-based growth experiences. Develops employees by monitoring, intervening and interacting, when appropriate, after assessing and evaluating the nursing care provided. Responsible for being knowledgeable of requirements of accrediting and regulatory agencies. Monitors compliance Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, including course work in chemistry, biology, and pharmacology required. Master’s Degree in Nursing or related health care field preferred. Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island. Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, physicians, research investigators and other professionals both within and outside the Hospital. Supervisory skills to direct and evaluate the work of subordinates. Analytical ability to classify and evaluate data, to assess abnormalities or problems with protocols and to monitor a budget. Organizational ability to develop and maintain records, to monitor adherence to protocols and to coordinate data collection from multiple outside sources. A professional level of knowledge in nursing to assess a wide variety of patients for inclusion in oncology research studies and to assess response to treatment. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care with consideration of the aging process, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: At least 5-7 years progressively more responsible experience in hematology and oncology clinical nursing, including experience in a research area. Prior leadership experience preferred. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Some exposure to patient care areas, with some walking between patient care areas. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Performs independently within the department’s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of departmental policies and procedures are required. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervisory responsibility for up to twenty-five FTE’s including research nurses, research nurse coordinators, and Nurse Practitioner.
