Environmental Health and Safety Manager

Position Summary The EHS Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure regulatory compliance and to promote a strong safety culture within a Superabrasives manufacturing environment. This role focuses on managing risks associated with high-energy manufacturing processes, hazardous materials, dust and particulate exposure, high-temperature sintering, pressing, grinding, and finishing operations, while supporting operational excellence and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities Environmental Compliance Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations (EPA, IDEM, OSHA, DOT, etc.). Manage air permits, wastewater discharge, stormwater, hazardous waste, and chemical storage programs. Oversee waste minimization, recycling, and sustainability initiatives. Maintain accurate environmental records, reports, and permit renewals. Lead environmental audits and serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies. Health & Safety Management Develop, implement, and enforce EHS policies, procedures, and standards aligned with company and regulatory requirements. Identify, evaluate, and mitigate workplace hazards related to: Superabrasive powders (diamond, CBN) Metal and resin bond materials Pressing, sintering, and HIP operations Grinding, cutting, and finishing processes Dust collection and combustible dust risks Lead industrial hygiene programs, including exposure monitoring for dusts, fumes, noise, and chemicals. Oversee PPE selection, training, and compliance. Training & Safety Culture Develop and deliver EHS training programs (new hire, refresher, job-specific). Promote a proactive safety culture through employee engagement, safety committees, and behavior-based safety initiatives. Coach supervisors and managers on EHS responsibilities and best practices. Incident Management & Risk Reduction Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation. Track and analyze safety metrics (TRIR, DART, near misses). Drive continuous improvement through risk assessments, job safety analyses (JSAs), and preventive programs. Management Systems & Audits Maintain EHS management systems (ISO 14001). Conduct internal audits and coordinate third-party audits. Support customer and corporate EHS audits as required. Leadership & Collaboration Partner with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, and HR to integrate EHS into daily operations. Support new equipment installation and process changes through EHS risk reviews. Manage EHS budget, contractors, and external consultants. Preferred Skills Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field. Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in EHS management within a manufacturing environment, with at least 3 years in a leadership role. Prior experience in abrasives, superabrasives, metal processing, ceramics, powder metallurgy, or similar industrial manufacturing strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and state regulatory compliance. Personal Attributes Strong knowledge of manufacturing hazards, industrial hygiene, and environmental compliance. Experience managing dust control and combustible dust risks. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and root-cause analysis skills. Strong communication and training abilities. Ability to influence at all levels of the organization. Proficiency with EHS reporting systems and Microsoft Office. Physical & Work Environment Requirements Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, and industrial equipment. Ability to walk the production floor and perform inspections. Occasional travel for training, audits, or regulatory meetings.
