Who We are Looking For : We want to hire a standout talent who is three or more years into their legal career and who would be thrilled to make a lasting difference for school districts and the students they serve. They are a self-starter who isn’t afraid to work hard and who can also chum it up with clients on phone calls and hang with them in a hospitality room at a conference. Critical Skills for a KSB Attorney Our practice is heavily relationship-based. Our attorneys must be able to build and maintain client relationships across many years. One big benefit of school law is that you work with great, selfless school officials who genuinely appreciate your help. An ideal candidate thrives in building relationships and frequently interacting with our clients, from day 1. Strong written and oral communication skills. Public speaking is a crucial skill within our practice; we present frequently to members of the education community including teachers, administrators, and school board members. An ideal candidate would also be comfortable presenting to middle and high school students and their parents on issues like digital citizenship. We consider ourselves to be as much a part of the education community as we do the legal community. We are looking for attorneys who have a commitment to the mission of public education. We would prefer to hire an attorney who has experience representing clients in administrative hearings or other litigation experience, although we can train the right person who comes to us without this background. We aren’t in trial very often, but we are occasionally in court and frequently in the midst of several administrative hearings and proceedings. We would prefer to hire an attorney who is already familiar with at least some of the substantive legal issues facing schools. Fortunately, that means we have wide areas of the law that will help a candidate stand out: labor and employment laws, disability laws (Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, Section 504, ADA), Title IX, First Amendment, and state laws governing open meetings and public records, to name a few. That experience is not required, but it would help with the learning curve. Currently licensed in Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, and/or Kansas, or the ability to obtain a license in one or more of those states. Our ideal candidate will have personal ties within Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Kansas, or other surrounding states, although this is not a deal breaker for us if the candidate is committed to serving clients in those states. But we also value family, friends, and personal interests away from the practice of law. We trust our attorneys to work the work, workshare willingly and proactively, and meet client needs. Unlike most firms, we don’t have a set “billable hours” requirement, even though we do traditional hourly work. We do a substantial and growing amount of flat fee work, and we track those hours. Those include a significant amount of presentations, creating on-demand content, tracking legislation, updating policies in our policy service, and building presentation slideshows. We track hours most firms don’t, including attending CLE’s, marketing, and networking with clients. Our workload minimums reflect hours across all of these areas. We prefer this holistic approach, because it allows us to value our work and invest in our firm, while also setting fair expectations for attorney output that rely on doing excellent work in all areas, not just the billing sheet.
