GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of the position is to provide support for the daily operations of the Youth Services department of the library, to perform paraprofessional library duties, and to perform related work as required. The position works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under the general supervision of the Youth Services Librarian.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

1. Responsible for providing services and programs to youth and parents, both in the library locations and at events off-site, under the guidance of the Youth Services Librarian.
2. Plans and presents programs and special events for children, young adults, and special-interest groups, etc., as assigned by the Youth Services Librarian.
3. Participates in collection development and management; selects books and other library materials; weeds damaged or outdated materials from the juvenile and young adult collections.
4. Provides readers' advisory services to patrons for juvenile and young adult materials; answers reference questions.
5. Promotes the library, its services, and programs to the public in a variety of formats; gives presentations to various community/civic/school groups and conducts library tours.
6. Assists the Youth Services Librarian with planning, promoting, and providing outreach services to local schools, daycares, community and special-interest organizations, etc., as appropriate.
7. Prepares book lists, website information, and promotional literature on library services and materials as assigned.
8. Attends continuing education classes, professional meetings, conferences, seminars and/or workshops as assigned to maintain knowledge of current theories and trends in youth services in public library operations and technology.
9. Compiles data for statistical reports as required.
10. Assists in ensuring the proper maintenance and use of Library equipment; troubleshoots and performs minor maintenance on equipment as required.

Additional duties include:

• Performs circulation duties when requested. Checks materials in and out; registers patrons for library cards; shelves materials; places holds on materials as requested; collects and receives fines and fees, etc.
• Assists library patrons in using various resources and equipment of the library, including the Internet; interprets library policies and procedures to the public.
• Required to work nights and weekends.
• Attends staff, committee, County and community meetings as appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to relate to children, teens, and families.

Ability to become familiar with the needs and interests of children and teens.

Ability to interact with and assist the public in a friendly and responsive manner.

Extensive knowledge of computers, their operating systems, and programs likely to be used in libraries, including familiarity with the Internet, word processing and databases.

Ability to perform in front of groups of various ages and to maintain control of large numbers of people.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to set priorities and be self-motivated.

Strong organizational skills for a customer-service-oriented environment.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.

Ability to retain a valid S.C. driver’s license.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Prefer some college.

Education may be substituted for experience.

Related-experience required: 1 year.

Experience may be substituted for education.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Required : None.

Preferred : None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a relatively safe and secure indoor work environment; may encounter noise, moisture, humidity, dust, odors, or poor ventilation.
