Civil Division AUSAs represent the United States at trial and appellate levels, including civil lawsuits, criminal prosecutions, actions to collect judgments, and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers. The Civil Division includes five sections: Complex and Defensive Litigation, Civil Fraud, Civil Rights, Tax and Bankruptcy, and Civil Appeals. The USAO’s main office is located in Los Angeles. Job Description We are seeking exceptional attorneys to serve as AUSAs in the Civil Division. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, solution-oriented mindset, excellent research and writing skills, and strong oral advocacy skills to represent the DOJ in court hearings, depositions, and settlement conferences. A Civil AUSA should also have a strong commitment to public service, attention to detail, sound judgment, and integrity in following DOJ and USAO policies. Key responsibilities include: Representing the United States in civil litigation at trial and appellate courts. Preparing and submitting briefs, pleadings, and motions. Conducting legal research and analysis. Advocating in court and other forums. Managing cases and collaborating with colleagues. Qualifications Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent), be an active member in good standing of the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction, and have at least 3 years of post‑J.D. legal experience. If not already an active member of the California bar, applicants must take and pass the California bar exam. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Preferred qualifications: Litigation experience, superior academic record, excellent writing skills, impeccable character, demonstrated interest in public service, courtroom presence, ability to work with a wide variety of people. Recent graduates with experience or clerking are also considered. Connections to Central District of California will be considered.
