Associate Executive Director

Job Description

The Associate Executive Director is a senior operational leader responsbile for translating the YMCA's strategy into strong day to day performance across assigned departments. Reporting to the CEO, this position leads department directors, strengthens program and member experiences, supports safe and well maintained facilities. The role models the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and builds a culture where staff, members and participants can achieve, relate and belong.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred; equivalent education and experience may be considered.
• At least 5 years of progressively responsible leadershp experience in YMCA, nonprofit, recreation, membership, youth development, aquatics, health and wellness, facilities or a related setting preferred.
• Experience supervising directors or multi-functional teams and demonstrated success in staff development, budgeting, operational improvement, and performance accountability required.
• Strong communication, coaching, financial analysis, problem solving, relationship building and decision making skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, use data to guide decisions, and work effectively with staff, members, volunteers, donors, board members, vendors and community partners.
• Commitment to the Y mission, philanthropy, safety, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
• Proficiency with business technology and relevant operating, membership, facility, budgeting, communication and reporting systems.

Essential Functions

Organizational and Operational Leadership

• Lead assigned departments and ensure operations are mission centered, safe, inclusive, member focused and financially responsible.
• Partner with the CEO to implement strategic priorities, annual plans, performance measures, and consistent systems for communication and accountability.
• Maintain a visible leadership presence throughout the Y and represent the organization professionally with members, volunteers, donors, partners, vendors and community stakeholders.

Staff Leadership and Culture

• Supervise, coach, evaluate and develop direct reports, including goal setting, performance feedback, succession planning, recognition and corrective action.
• Partner with CEO and Human Resources on hiring, onboarding, employee relations, investigations, policy implementation, and employment recommendations
• Build a collaborative, inclusive, and accountable workplace where staff are equipped to succeed and departments work effectively together.

Programs, Membership, Aquatics and Facillities

• Ensure programs are safe, high quality, inclusive, responsive to community needs and sustainable; guide decisions to grow, improve, restructure or discontinue offerings.
• Strengthen member acquisitions, engagement, satisfaction, retention, belonging, and consistent resolution of member concerns.
• Support aquatics leadership in delivering safe, high quality programming and maintaining required certifications, staffing documentation and operating standards.
• Direct facility priorities so buildings, grounds, pools, equipment, and program spaces are clean, safe, functional, welcoming, and supported by preventive maintenance and capital planning.
• Coordinate with the Director of Finance and Human Resources on organization wide risk management practices and ensure assigned departments follow safety, child protection, emergency, regulatory and documentation requirements.

Financial Stewardship and Performance

• Review financial and operating performance regularly, hold leaders accountable for results and provde the CEO with timely variance explanations and recommednations.
• Lead development of assigned budgets, revenue goals, staffing plans, pricing recommendations, forecasts, and expense controls.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements


This position works throughout YMCA offices, wellness areas, gyms, pools, locker rooms, youth spaces, mechanical and storage areas, outdoor spaces, and community locations. It requires the ability to move throughout the facility, observe programs, inspect spaces, support events, respond to operational needs, and occasionally lift or move supplies and equipment consistent with safety practices.

Required Certifications

Current CPR, First Aid, AED and other required certifications, or ability to obtain them within the required timeframe.
