School Crossing GuardThe position of School Crossing Guard is a very responsible position requiring analytical ability, common sense, and intelligence. It involves assuring the safety of the school children of Martin County while getting them to and from the school crossing areas. It also involves directing the flow of traffic during the school crossing hours. This is a civilian part time position. The School Crossing Guard shall answer directly to the School Crossing Guard Supervisor. Major duties include but are not limited to:Observes moving traffic, traffic control signals and pedestrian crossing signals visually at assigned locationsDetermines when it is appropriate to have pedestrians cross and moves to the center of the crosswalks and intersections to halt traffic within the traffic signal walk cycleRequires students and other pedestrians to wait until traffic is clear or stopped and directs their travel across the streetsHolds hand-held stop sign at appropriate height for traffic to observeUnderstands and applies verbal instructionsUtilizes appropriate safety vests, equipment and proceduresTravels and reports to assigned locations in a timely manner which can varyDirects the flow of traffic in and out of school grounds during school crossing hours to maintain as clear a road passage as possibleAdditional Duties: This position requires the ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems and office computer. Performs other related duties as directed by the supervisor and/or the designee.Typical QualificationsMinimum Education and Training High School Diploma or GED; attend and pass annual required training classes provided by MCSO; attend and pass the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) School Crossing Guard Training, as required by Florida Statutes 316.75. Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None noted at this time Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by jobholder to successfully perform the essential functions of this job and to ensure the safety and welfare of both the children and employee. The member should possess the ability to perceive movement and depth of field, detect smells, discern most colors and have manual and finger dexterity. Frequent stooping and bending is required, as well as manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and the ability to grasp objects. Flexibility is important for climbing over and around obstacles and in the event of sudden movement when avoiding dangers. Mental alertness is required for fine discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger. Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within seconds, therefore, incumbents must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness. Frequent stooping and bending are required, as well as finger and manual dexterity, fine motor skills and the ability to grasp objects. Position requires jobholder to have clear speaking, hearing and vision abilities. Specific vision abilities include color perception, close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. Employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Must possess sufficient physical strength to stand and walk for long periods of time, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.Supplemental InformationWork Environment: Work conditions may vary. The majority of tasks are performed outdoors and may occasionally be during inclement weather and dark hours. Removal: Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency. Economic conditions that cause reductions in work force, the member's inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks are among the major reasons for job removal without fault. Failure to support the agency's mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in manner that supports the Sheriff's Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions for original employment, or to display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons will lead to removal with or without fault. In addition, accruing atypical amounts of dysfunctional work time or requiring atypical amounts of supervisory counseling or remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault.
