Phlebotomist

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training and making workflow recommendations. Position Responsibilities Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, update patient information. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures. Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner. Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport and store samples according to required temperature and appropriate collection containers. Follow OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual department trainings. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Minimum Qualifications Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
