Job Description:

The Physical Therapy Assistant provides rehabilitative treatment to patients under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist. This position implements established treatment plans, assists patients with therapeutic exercises and functional activities, monitors patient response and tolerance, and provides education regarding mobility, posture, equipment use, and home exercise programs. The Physical Therapy Assistant delivers safe, effective, and patient-centered care while considering each patient's physical, psychosocial, cognitive, communication, and age-related needs.

Responsibilities:

• Provides physical therapy interventions under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist and in accordance with the established plan of care, departmental policies, and applicable professional standards.
• Assists patients in therapeutic exercise, transfer training, balance and coordination activities, gait training, and ambulation programs to improve mobility, strength, safety, and functional independence.
• Observes patients' physical status, functional needs, and response to treatment, considering age, psychosocial, cognitive, and communication needs throughout the treatment session.
• Monitors patient tolerance and progress during therapy, documents services and clinical observations accurately, and promptly communicates changes, concerns, or the need for reassessment to the supervising Physical Therapist.
• Instructs patients and caregivers in the safe use and care of wheelchairs, braces, canes, crutches, prosthetic devices, orthotic devices, and other adaptive or mobility equipment, as applicable.
• Directs patients in the safe use and care of wheelchairs, braces, canes, crutches, prosthetic devices, orthotic devices, and other adaptive or mobility equipment.
• Uses therapeutic equipment and modalities properly and safely and maintains treatment areas and equipment in a clean, organized, and operational condition.
• Adapts instruction to meet patients' language, cognitive, physical, and learning needs and follows infection-prevention practices, standard precautions, patient-rights requirements, confidentiality standards, and departmental safety procedures.
• Participates in departmental meetings, performance-improvement and quality-improvement activities, and other assigned responsibilities that support patient care and departmental operations.
• Complies with organizational, regulatory, insurance, confidentiality, infection-prevention, and patient-safety requirements; and participates in continuing education to maintain current clinical knowledge

Requirements:

• Associate degree from a Physical Therapy Assistant program registered by New York State, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education, or otherwise recognized as meeting New York State licensure requirements required
• Clinical education or experience providing therapeutic exercise, mobility training, functional activities, and related physical therapy interventions required
• Current New York State license and registration as a Physical Therapy Assistant required
• Knowledge of physical therapy treatment techniques, therapeutic exercise, functional training, transfer techniques, and gait training.
• Ability to safely implement a treatment plan established by a licensed Physical Therapist.
• Ability to observe and communicate changes in patient condition, response, progress, and tolerance to treatment
