Physician in Charge

SUMMARY The Physician‑in‑Charge (PIC) is responsible for the primary and long‑term medical needs of participants of PACE Southeast Michigan (SEMI). The PIC reports to the Medical Director and performs medical evaluation including detailed history, physical exam, record review, diagnostic ordering, and synthesis of results. As a member of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), the PIC provides medical leadership, supervises NPs and PAs, and plans health care needs of participants. RESPONSIBILITIES Administrative duties: Workday management, performance evaluations, team huddles, documentation timeliness, performance improvement plans with the medical director, and financial oversight related to quality and utilization. Utilization oversight: authorize and manage PEND reports. Clinical practice: develop and apply chronic disease management guidelines, infection control including COVID protocols, and subspecialist referral processes. Training & education: collaborate with the Clinic Manager to facilitate clinic flow, conduct training for staff, and lead continuous educational activities. Clinical oversight: supervise APPs and PCTs, review documentation, audit timeliness, manage subspecialist referrals, and provide clinical support for acute or complex cases, including end‑of‑life conversations. Implement Model 10 principles of personal leadership and Guiding Principles of Clinical Care for providers. QUALIFICATIONS MD or DO with current Michigan license. Board certified in Internal Medicine or Family Practice with recent geriatrics experience. At least one year working with frail or elderly populations. Ability to lead and direct licensed and non‑licensed staff. Strong interpersonal and interdepartmental relationship skills. Knowledge of adult‑learning principles for staff education. Commitment to continuing education and professional development. Participation in national PACE Association committees as appointed. Must complete CMS competency review before independent practice. MINIMUM TRAINING & SCREENING Annual mandatory training and screening such as infection control, TB testing, safety training, and BLS. Must maintain all immunizations and be cleared for communicable diseases before direct participant contact. WORKING CONDITIONS Varied exposure to communicable diseases; requires reliable daily transportation and an acceptable driving record. Physical demands: frequent walking, bending, lifting up to forty (40) pounds.
