Medical Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship

The apprenticeship position allows the Medical Laboratory Technician to meet the requirements of the Medical Laboratory Technician program by successfully completing competencies outlined in the program. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Apprentice performs a wide variety of complex critical tests and analyses on patient samples in the areas of Blood Banking, Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology and Parasitology which provide clinical information for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases under the supervision of the Lead Medical Technologist or Director, Laboratory Services.

Responsibilities include performing tests on patient samples, completing complex critical analyses following written protocol; performing and analyzing quality control procedures; troubleshooting all procedures in the areas assigned; operating all instruments in the areas assigned; performing start-up reagent loading and maintenance as required on various instrumentation; verifying and documenting test results using Epic or appropriate laboratory system; confirming abnormal results and calling "critical values" to appropriate teammates; operating HIS and LIS technology proficiently; maintaining work area in a clean and sanitary condition; assisting in the training of new teammates and students; informing supervisors of shortages of supplies or consumables; assisting in writing procedures for the section; using appropriate interaction with and providing recommended or required services to all patients; maintaining a safe environment for self and teammates; applying knowledge of the principles of universal precautions; completing continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements; actively participating in staff meetings; participating in quality/performance improvement activities; communicating effectively and appropriately with teammates and supervisor to assure the quality and integrity of the service; presenting and promoting a professional demeanor at all times; establishing high standards of customer service; supporting responsibility, pride, and teamwork; remaining calm under pressure; and offering reasonable solutions for problems.

Education Enrollment in the Medical Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Program. Licensure/Certification Certification from ASCP preferred. Experience One year in an acute hospital setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities include knowledge of a variety of medical laboratory tests preferred; good analytical skills; detail oriented; ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English; proficient with MS Office and Epic, and able to learn new software rapidly; and ability to stand and work on uncarpeted floors for duration or significant portion of shift.
