The City of Kent is seeking a skilled and dependable Fleet Mechanic 2 to join our Fleet Services team and help maintain the diverse range of vehicles and heavy equipment that support essential City operations. In this journey-level role, you will perform mechanical repairs, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance on everything from passenger vehicles and emergency response units to construction equipment, tractors, mowers, and specialty machinery.

Working with considerable independence, you will inspect and diagnose mechanical issues, complete high-quality repairs, perform road tests and job-site service calls, maintain detailed service records, and ensure all work meets established safety and performance standards. This role also supports emergency and response vehicle systemsincluding wiring, electronics, radios, and onboard technologymaking it a key contributor to the reliability of critical City services.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by two (2) years of post-high school training or trade school in mechanical maintenance and repairs, along with three (3) years of experience as a journey level mechanic with knowledge and experience with a diversified fleet of heavy gasoline and diesel equipment and vehicles.

SALARY:

$7,312.00- $8,905.00 per month, depending on qualifications

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Fleet Superintendent, and supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, incumbent performs skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work required to maintain the City's fleet of vehicles, mowers and heavy construction equipment.

Work is characterized by a substantial volume of skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of all City motorized equipment including specialized machines; using electronic testing equipment, and hand and power tools as required.

Work is performed with considerable independence in accordance with specific instructions and defined procedures and schedules. Supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines; and assists employee with unusual situations, which do not have clear objectives or precedents. Employee plans and carries out assignments and handles problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, procedures and/or accepted practices. Work is evaluated for technical soundness and conformity to practice and policy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform journey level maintenance and mechanical repair of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, tractors, mowers and all other types of City power driven equipment in accordance with standard and OEM repair and maintenance procedures.

Operate both light and heavy equipment during pick-up and delivery and road testing of equipment.

Inspect vehicle/equipment for repair, diagnose problems and specify repair and parts required.

Perform job site repairs on equipment and vehicles as needed.

Inspect driver's report of equipment malfunctions or deficiencies and determine necessary repairs, which are made in accordance with the latest standards and techniques.

Test and inspect completed work to ensure proper performance.

Maintain records and complete repair reports. Record accurate readings from fuel pumps on a rotating schedule. Complete all reports and paperwork on a timely basis.

Consult with Senior Mechanic for scheduling of work assigned on a regular basis.

Participate in the Division's job safety program.

Communicate with and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, clients, contractors, and other city employees.

Clean and maintain the repair shop by cleaning tools, equipment, floors and work benches.

Weld and fabricate parts as needed.

Installation and maintenance of emergency and response vehicle electronics, including but not limited to strobe lights, light bars, lighted signs, radios, modems, computer systems, printers, inverters, theft lock out systems, and antennas.

Wiring harness set up, install fuses, relays, switches, and panels.

Programming, updating, and troubleshooting radios, other emergency systems, and Automated Vehicle Locator systems with existing software and coding.

Maintain records of installations.

Actively support the vision, mission, values and goals of the department and the City.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Standard practices and techniques for maintenance and repair of a large, centralized fleet of automobiles, light and heavy trucks including all types of grounds maintenance and construction equipment
• Principles of gasoline and diesel engines
• Principles of hybrid and fully electric vehicle systems
• A/C Systems (R134A & R1234YF)
• Hydraulic and electrical systems
• Electrical and wiring systems
• Practices, methods, and tools used in acetylene and arc welding
• New technology and service requirements
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions of a fleet repair facility
• Engine and chassis units and general repair work
• Safety requirements and specifications of various types of vehicles and equipment
• Methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in fleet maintenance and repair
• Correct usage of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary as it pertains to the job
• Personal computers and their basic use

SKILLED IN:

• Using hand and machine tools, including but not limited to electronic testing equipment
• Analyzing, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical problems
• Interpersonal communication and relations using tact, patience, and courtesy
• Gaining sensitive information about accidents/damage without alienating the driver/operator

ABILITY TO:

• Write legibly, maintain records and complete reports
• Locate and correct mechanical defects using proper tools, parts or equipment for specific repair problems
• Maintain required certifications
• Use initiative and resourcefulness in handling repair problems
• Acquire knowledge of the operating details, procedures, specialized equipment and other characteristics of specified assignment
• Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, other City employees and outside individuals

SKILLS FOR THE POSITION MAY BE GAINED THROUGH EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, RELEVANT JOB EXPERIENCE or a COMBINATION, SUCH AS:

Education: High school diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by two (2) years post high school training or trade school in the mechanical maintenance and repairs; and

Experience: Three (3) years' experience as a journey level mechanic with knowledge and experience with a diversified fleet of heavy gasoline and diesel equipment and vehicles and the use of state-of-the-art testing and OEM service and repair equipment.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid Washington State Driver's License, or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
• City forklift safety course and operating certification
• Air Condition Certification
• Automobile Brakes - A5 ASE Certification
• Medium-Heavy Duty Truck Brakes - T4 ASE Certification
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N within 6 months of employment
• Valid First Aid/CPR certification within 6 months of employment
• Successful completion of the City's Defensive Driving Course within 6 months of employment
• New employee must successfully pass the City's pre-employment driver's records check and; all employees must maintain an excellent driving record
