The OpportunityThe Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) seeks an experienced and collaborative Chief People Officer (CPO) to oversee all aspects of the museum's Human Resources Department and lead the institution's DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access) strategies. The CPO serves as a senior executive and trusted advisor to the George D. Widener Director and Chief Executive Officer, to whom the position reports. Key duties include overseeing, planning and managing of all human resources functions; providing strong leadership for the human resources team; and being a champion of the museum’s core values and commitment to attract, retain, advance, and support a broadly diverse workforce of the highest caliber that thrives in a respectful and equitable workplace culture.Institutional OverviewThe Philadelphia Museum of Art is a national and international destination for art, but first it is Philadelphia’s Museum of Art – for all the many diverse communities of the city. Through its collections, exhibitions, events, educational activities, celebrations, and more, the PMA is a storyteller and welcomes everyone to be part of the story – the museum’s doors are wide open. With a history dating back to 1876, the PMA is one of the country’s oldest art museums and has long been recognized as one of its finest. Its collection, numbering some 245,000 works of art, lies at the core of PMA’s mission; it is the foundation upon which all museum activities are built. Recognized today as one of the great art collections of the world, the museum’s holdings include outstanding works of art from many cultures, places, and epochs, while maintaining an emphasis on objects with a particular connection to the city of Philadelphia and its rich and distinguished history. The museum’s collection developed from works exhibited at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Fairmount Park; the encyclopedic holdings span 4,000 years.Candidate ProfileWhile the PMA will consider a broad range of backgrounds, the ideal candidate will have the following background and experience:Leadership experience: 5+ years of proven experience in a senior leadership role, including leadership in DEIA strategy.Background: 10+ years’ experience in cultural institutions, higher education, or other nonprofit organizations.Proven track record of integrating DEIA into an organization’s people strategy, culture, governance, and operations; developing and leading a centralized DEIA office, collaborating across all departments to incorporate equity into workforce planning, leadership accountability, employee experience, and institutional decision-making.A strong team player with a positive attitude and ability to absorb and learn quickly; willing to go the extra mile.Builds strong and successful relationships, effectively supporting and influencing colleagues, managers, and senior leadership.Excellent communicator through clear and effective oral and written communication with exceptional attention to detail.Impeccable integrity, ethics, and professionalism.Master’s degree is strongly preferred.Institutional requirements:Upholds the professional standards of the field, always acts in a manner that is consistent with the best interests of the museum and protects and enhances its reputation and standing within the community of museums.Adheres to the museum’s code of conduct and Employee Handbook and avoids any real or perceived conflicts of interest.Shows respect for co-workers and visitors and an understanding of and appreciation for the diversity of the museum’s staff, volunteers, and audiences.Maintains confidentiality.Adheres to all Museum protocols, procedures, rules, and policies.Background check required after a conditional job offer is made.
