Job Description

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling, and contributing to workflow improvements. This position involves troubleshooting routine issues, training others on proper techniques, and maintaining high standards of patient care, safety, and regulatory compliance in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other blood collection procedures using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of skill and accuracy.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and specific test requirements.
• Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring their comfort and understanding.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order, following detailed protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or orders to confirm correctness before processing.
• Package specimens for transport, ensuring appropriate containers, temperature conditions, and documentation are used to preserve sample quality.
• Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, following protocol for each test type.
• Follow all procedures outlined for specimen transport to maintain the integrity and viability of samples.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control standards.
• Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a clean and safe laboratory environment.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure documentation is complete and current.
• Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries when appropriate and in accordance with policies.
• Provide input on workflow recommendations and assist with troubleshooting routine operational issues to improve efficiency.
• Support training efforts by demonstrating proper specimen collection techniques and reinforcing adherence to protocols.

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, including current CPT license where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• 2–4 years of overall experience in a clinical or laboratory environment.
• Proven proficiency in performing blood draws and venipunctures using straight and butterfly needles.
• Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.
• Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying orders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and communication.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Solid understanding of physicians’ orders and ability to interpret and follow them correctly.
• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting while maintaining accuracy and quality.
• Strong communication skills to explain procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and reassuring manner.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks such as specimen collection, labeling, data recording, and decontamination within established timeframes.
• Comfort in answering telephone inquiries and conveying laboratory results in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Experience participating in or supporting workflow improvements and process enhancements.
• Reliability in attending annual trainings and staying current with departmental procedures and standards.

This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you work directly with patients and clinical staff. You regularly perform blood draws and other specimen collections, operate centrifuges and other lab equipment, and handle biological samples under strict safety and infection control protocols. The environment requires adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, participation in annual department trainings, and consistent use of appropriate protective attire and hygiene practices. Work typically involves standing for extended periods, managing multiple tasks, and using computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information and document laboratory activities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of San Diego, CA.

The pay range for this position is $23.50 - $25.00/hr.
