Horticulturist The Horticulturist isresponsible for the care, maintenance, and presentation of all live plants inthe vessel’s public areas and open decks. This role ensures plants remainhealthy, aesthetically pleasing, and in compliance with service and safetystandards. The Horticulturist conducts regular plant care tasks, maintainsirrigation and soil systems, manages plant inventory and vendor coordination,and supports environmental health initiatives. The position requirescollaboration with the Environmental Officer, readiness to train and mentorjunior deck crew, and flexibility to work across shifts and during specialevents. KeyResponsibilities: Maintain appearance, health, and maintenance of all live plants in public areas and open decks; monitor for pests and diseases and take proactive corrective actions.; Manage irrigation systems, adjust watering schedules, and monitor soil moisture and nutrient needs; apply fertilizers and soil amendments per plant requirements and safety policies.; Inspect and care for plant displays, prune, pinch, deadhead, re-pot, and replace plants as needed; remove diseased or dead plant material and arrange for replacement stock.; Coordinate with Plant and Flower vendors for plant replacements and specialized care; communicate plant needs and issues to vendors.; Clean and sanitize plant care tools and equipment; store supplies properly and maintains a clean work environment within plant care areas.; Maintain accurate records of plant inventory, locations, care schedules, and treatments; produce voyage reports detailing plant status and planned maintenance.; Manage chemical and supply inventories for plant care, ensuring safe storage and use in accordance with safety policies.; Support environmental and safety initiatives; assist with IPM-related activities and collaborate with the Environmental Officer as required.; Assist with training and mentoring of junior deck crew in basic horticulture practices and plant care techniques.; Attend meetings, trainings, and all other work-related activities as required. ; Qualifications& Training: Two to three years of plant care experience in a 4- or 5-star hotel, resort, or other high-profile public venue with interior landscape features.; Degree or formal education in Botany, Horticulture, Arboriculture, Ornamental Horticulture (preferred).; Knowledge of ornamental plant requirements, including use of insecticides, fertilizers, and gardening tools.; Understanding of integrated pest management (IPM) principles and safety procedures for handling chemicals.; Ability to review plant care practices and adapt to vessel operations, strong organizational and recordkeeping skills. ; LanguageRequirements: Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests and crew.; Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures; effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors, and co-workers.; Additional languages such as Spanish, French, or German are preferred but not required. ; Physical& Environmental Requirements: Physical: Regularly stand, walk, and perform manual plant care tasks; lift and move plants and supplies as needed (up to 50 pounds); perform tasks requiring balance, dexterity, and endurance.; Vision: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.; Environmental: Work in shipboard environments with varying temperatures, humidity, and lighting; exposure to outdoor deck conditions and indoor public areas; wear appropriate PPE as required; may be required to work shifts, including evenings and weekends; participate in emergency procedures and drills. Full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and communication abilities is required to perform duties effectively. ; AdditionalNotes: Candidates must be committed to safety and environmental standards. ; Work involves physical activity and exposure to challenging environments.; Candidates are expected to work on board an international cruise ship.
