DJS COMMUNITY DETENTION OFFICER I

Community Detention Officer I We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of Community Detention Officer I. The Community Detention (CD) Program is a statewide alternative to detention program that allows a youth to be in the community on a court‑ordered home detention as opposed to being placed in secure confinement pending a court appearance. Youth in the program are subject to enhanced treatment and supervision through electronic monitoring, face‑to‑face and telephone contacts, and daily telephone contacts by the Community Detention Officer (CDO). The Command Center provides additional treatment coverage 24/7 by monitoring alerts and working with the CDOs, police, DJS staff, and stakeholders when violations occur. Location of Position Capital South Region, 1100 Mercantile Lane, Suite 120, Largo, MD 20774. Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation. Experience: One (1) year of experience supervising youth in a structured environment, such as a recreation center or school setting, or in a juvenile services facility or community program. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in Correctional Officer classifications or Correctional Officer specialty codes in the Miscellaneous Occupations field of work on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience. Preferred Qualifications Three years of experience supervising youth in a structured environment, such as a recreation center or school setting, or in a juvenile services facility or community program. Experience supervising youth in a juvenile facility. Knowledge of the processes and procedures of the juvenile court system. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Candidates appointed to positions in this classification must obtain certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. Special Requirements U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status. Must be at least 21 years of age. A thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing. An oral interview. Physical and psychological examinations. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
