Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist - Hematology

Job Overview This position performs routine and special lab tests, coordinates the implementation of new procedures, and is responsible for resolving day‑to‑day laboratory technical problems, notifying the laboratory immediate supervisor or pathologist as appropriate. Responsible for supervisory role of a department section, coordinating operations within the section to ensure reliable patient testing and timely services. Monitors performance improvement and quality control activities, adheres to institutional policies, assists in maintaining compliance with accrediting/regulatory agencies, and maintains confidentiality of patient‑related information. Shift Hours Days Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical or biological science. Copy of transcript required. Work Experience: Four years in an appropriate clinical laboratory under a qualified director, including one year in the appropriate clinical lab section. Documentation of rotation or a signed letter from the laboratory medical director is required. Preferred: experience with advanced analytical skills for complex data analysis and equipment troubleshooting. Certifications: Current state license if applicable; ASCP, AMT, or AAB certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technologist. ASCP incumbents on or after January 1 2004 must complete the ASCP Certification Maintenance Program. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Computer skills for data entry and retrieval. Effective verbal and written communication; ability to present information clearly and professionally. Proficiency with Windows applications and role‑specific software packages. Strong interpersonal skills. Experience working in a controlled environment, following safety measures (chemicals, body fluids, blood‑borne pathogens). Advanced analytical skills to collect data, perform calculations, maintain system logs, and operate laboratory computer equipment. Judgmental skills to identify and solve problems and handle difficult situations. Stress‑management skills to maintain a professional atmosphere and provide quality service. Ability to work independently. Job Duties Coordinates clinical competency in the section. Performs routine and special laboratory procedures. Maintains regulatory compliance and performance improvement. Assists and consults with the laboratory supervisor/director. Maintains competency, meets goals and objectives. Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including privacy respect, patient introduction, explanation of services, permission requests, and communication style. Other related duties as required. Additional Information Remains knowledgeable of current federal, state and local laws, accreditation standards and regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility and ensures compliance with all such laws, regulations and standards. Compliance & Privacy Program and Standards of Conduct include immediate reporting of any unethical or questionable behaviors or conduct, patient/employee safety, patient privacy and other compliance‑related concerns. Physical and Environmental Demands: Medium work—requires occasional lifting of 20 to 50 pounds, frequent lifting of 10 to 25 pounds, and light continuous effort.
