Fleet Maintenance Mechanic IIThe City is seeking a skilled and dependable Fleet Maintenance Mechanic II to help keep its diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment safe, reliable, and ready to serve the community. This hands-on position performs complex diagnostics, maintenance, repairs, overhauls, fabrication, and equipment outfitting on gasoline-, diesel-, hydraulic-, pneumatic-, and electronically controlled systems.Working primarily at the Corporation Yard, the Fleet Maintenance Mechanic II independently performs the full range of journey-level fleet maintenance duties. The position supports a wide variety of City operations by servicing automobiles, police vehicles, trucks, heavy equipment, mowers, sweepers, and other specialized equipment.Keep the in-person* panel interview dates in mind as you apply:Round 1 | Wednesday, October 28, 2026Round 2 | Thursday, November 5, 2026*Virtual interview option must be requested and approved in advance.Fleet Maintenance Mechanic II performs a wide variety of mechanical repairs, maintenance, and outfitting of fleet vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to gasoline, diesel, and other power and mechanical driven equipment; and to perform related work as required. This position is primarily assigned to the Corporation Yard but may occasionally be assigned to equipment stationed at other locations.Fleet Maintenance Mechanic II is the mid- to journey-level class in the fleet maintenance mechanic series. Positions assigned to this classification work under general supervision performing the full range of fleet maintenance tasks. Work in this classification is distinguished from that of Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I by the greater complexity of assignments received, the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate, and the exercise of judgment and initiative in the performance of daily duties.Examples of essential duties and responsibilities (may include but are not limited to):Tests, inspects, diagnoses, and troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic problems or defects in fleet vehicles and equipment to assess their condition and determine maintenance and repair needs.Tunes, repairs, and overhauls gasoline and diesel engines, standard and automatic transmissions, clutch and brake systems, and other major automobile & heavy equipment components.Fabricates special parts and outfits new equipment, such as police vehicles, for City service.Adjusts, repairs, replaces, and/or rebuilds carburetors, fuel injection systems, and other fuel system components. Installs, troubleshoots, adjusts, replaces, repairs, and rewires electrical components (e.g. ignition, signals, lights, and electrical controls), including computer-controlled components.Repairs and rebuilds hydraulic and pneumatic apparatus such as backhoes, loaders, booms, and lifts.Adjusts, disassembles, and repairs or rebuilds drum and disc braking systems, valves, master cylinders, and pneumatic or other hydraulic controls.Repairs and replaces suspension and steering components.Adjusts, repairs, maintains, or overhauls automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, power take off drives, clutches, and related drive train components.Uses welding and cutting equipment to make repairs or modify equipment.Assists other mechanics or oversees others on jobs requiring more than one person.Orders materials and supplies required for maintenance and repair work.Keeps records of work performed, time and materials (including cost of materials) used by work request.Maintains and inspects for the safety of others, the shop, equipment, and surroundings.Repairs and rebuilds belt driven apparatus such as mowers, blowers, and sweepers.Performs on-site field repairs to stationary or disabled equipment.Minimum requirements:HS diploma or equivalentThree (3) to five (5) years of experience performing fleet maintenance repairSpecial requirements apply - please see the Job Description.The successful candidate knowledge of:Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and equipment.Fleet-related light and heavy-duty power-driven equipment, electrical systems, and computer control systems.Hybrid technology.Electric vehicle technologyBasic understanding of best practices, especially those relating to safety and risk management.Skills and abilities to:Demonstrated skills and experience to adequately perform or learn to perform the types of essential duties as exemplified above.Weld and fabricate as required.Work safely, effectively, and efficiently.Perform mathematical calculations required in fleet maintenance activities.Follow written and oral instructions in English, working under general supervision.Skillfully use hand and power tools related to fleet maintenance and repair.Quickly learn new methods or techniques of fleet maintenance and repair work.Keep and maintain accurate records and occasionally provide written reports.Interact effectively with other staff.Perform heavy physical labor.The City of Mill Valley prides itself in its workforce and is pleased to offer a generous benefits package.
