Job Summary The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for enforcing laws, maintaining public safety, and performing duties within the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department. Salary Range $36.60 - $46.78 per hour. Pay & Benefits Effective December 27, 2025, the starting pay rate for candidates with no experience is at least $36.60 per hour. Starting pay for those hired with experience will be determined based on experience. Deputies receive health, dental, vision, and life insurance, participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System, vacation time, paid sick leave, and a comprehensive employee wellness program. Newly hired deputies with at least three years of full‑time certified law enforcement experience within 48 months prior to hire are eligible for superior starting wages, up to 10 days of vacation, and 40 hours of paid sick time during the first year. Minimum Training & Experience Requirements At least 18 years of age. United States citizenship. High school diploma or GED. Sixty (60) credits of post‑high school education (associate degree level or higher) from an accredited university, college or technical school, preferably in criminal justice, police science, business or public administration, or the social sciences. A maximum of 60 credits may be waived for individuals who meet additional criteria. Ability to possess a firearm. No felony convictions. Valid driver’s license. Sworn law‑enforcement experience, eligibility for certification as a law‑enforcement professional in Wisconsin, or current enrollment in a law‑enforcement academy. Out‑of‑state law‑enforcement officers must schedule a reciprocity exam at the time of application and pass it prior to hiring. Supplemental Information The selection process typically includes an application review, employment interview, background investigation, physical ability testing, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug test.
