Who We Are

McGarvey's Saloon & Oyster Bar is not a chain, and it never has been. We are an independent Annapolis institution, open since 1975, steeped in local tradition and in the middle of just about every important event in this town. St. Patrick's Day. The Sock Burning. Commissioning Week. The Fourth of July. Parents Weekend. The fall boat shows. If it happens in Annapolis, it happens here.

We have a proud history of veteran ownership. McGarvey's was founded by an Air Force veteran and is owned today by graduates of the United States Naval Academy. That leadership shows up in how we run the place. Standards are high, expectations are clear, and people are treated well.

The Role

This job is about the guest experience from the moment somebody walks through the front door.

You own the room. You greet people, you time the seating, you keep the flow moving when there is a wait out the door, and you make sure everyone leaves feeling like they were taken care of. You will report to the General Manager and work alongside a floor team of about 15, including experienced servers and bartenders who know this place inside out.

We are not looking for somebody to come in and overhaul what we do. We have been at this a long time and it works. We are looking for somebody who will sharpen it, tighten the details, and make a good thing better.

Expect a packed lunch, a packed dinner, and a large late night crowd behind it. We really do it all.

What You Will Do

• Own the front door and the host stand. Greet guests, read the room, and set the tone for the entire visit
• Time and pace the seating so the kitchen, the bar, and the servers all stay in rhythm
• Manage phones, waitlists, and table planning
• Deliver exceptional service through table touches, real conversation, and a warm goodbye
• Lead and support the floor team throughout service
• Handle guest issues in the moment, before they become complaints
• Monitor and control labor, food, beverage, and supply costs
• Help keep the restaurant clean, organized, and safe for guests and staff alike
• Close the restaurant 2 to 3 nights per week

What We Are Looking For

• A positive attitude and a genuine smile. This one is not negotiable. It is the whole job.
• At least 2 years of restaurant management or supervisory experience. This is a requirement, not a preference.
• Real command of a busy host stand, including seating timing and pacing
• Energy. This room moves, and you have to move with it
• Someone who wants to grow. We would rather develop somebody than rent them
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Highly organized, detail oriented, and able to juggle several things at once
• Calm and professional when the room gets loud
• Able to read a situation quickly and find solutions that work for both guests and staff
• High standards for personal hygiene and appearance
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds and stay on your feet for most of a shift

Schedule

Five shifts per week with two days off. Nights, weekends, and holidays are part of the job. We are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

This job closes. McGarvey's closes at 2:00 AM, and the closing manager is often not out the door until 3:00 AM. You would close 2 to 3 nights per week. Please do not apply if late nights will not work for your life.

• $55,000.00 to $70,000.00 per year, based on experience
