Job Title: Welder and Fabricator Job Description

This role combines advanced welding and fabrication work to support maintenance, fleet, and plant operations. You will perform specialized welds on a variety of materials, fabricate projects ranging from simple to highly complex, and ensure all work meets quality and safety standards. The position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to read and interpret shop drawings and technical documents.

• Perform difficult and specialized welds in accordance with applicable welding certifications and standards.
• Fabricate projects ranging from simple to very complex, including work on galvanized and stainless steel materials.
• Select appropriate welding and fabrication equipment for each job and plan layouts and weld sequences as required by maintenance.
• Read and interpret shop drawings accurately to determine project requirements and fabrication steps.
• Generate complete material lists for fabrication projects and ensure all required materials are available before starting work.
• Prepare for projects by gathering all raw materials specified in the shop drawings and setting up equipment properly.
• Weld parts using gas welding equipment and other welding processes as needed to complete assigned tasks.
• Work with Fleet Maintenance to perform welding on yard cranes, yard equipment, and rolling stock.
• Work with Plant Maintenance to perform welding throughout the plant, including on production beds and batch plant equipment.
• Identify workplace hazards related to welding and fabrication and comply with all safety requirements and procedures.
• Operate hi-lo equipment as needed to move materials and components safely.
• Operate cranes as needed to lift, position, and secure heavy materials and assemblies.
• Maintain required inventory counts by conducting weekly inventory checks and ordering weld shop supplies as needed.
• Ensure all welding and fabrication work meets established quality standards and specifications.
• Clean and maintain the work area, machines, tools, and equipment on a regular basis.
• Perform other routine duties and tasks as assigned to support overall shop and maintenance operations.

• Certification in all applicable welding processes, with the ability to perform difficult and specialized welds.
• Proficiency in MIG welding and TIG welding, including work on stainless steel and galvanized materials.
• Strong blueprint and shop drawing reading skills, including the ability to interpret dimensions, weld symbols, and fabrication details.
• Hands-on experience in welding and fabrication, including projects of varying complexity.
• Ability to select proper welding and fabrication equipment and plan layouts for each job.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence clearly and accurately.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees when discussing work, safety, or procedures.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry concepts to layout, measurement, and fabrication tasks.
• Ability to solve practical problems and work with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
• Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Basic understanding of confined space procedures and related safety requirements.
• Ability to operate cranes safely for lifting and positioning materials.
• Ability to operate hi-lo equipment safely in a shop and yard environment.

• Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or six months to one year of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience generating material lists and planning fabrication projects from shop drawings.
• Experience working with fleet maintenance teams on yard cranes, yard equipment, and rolling stock.
• Experience supporting plant maintenance, including production beds and batch plant equipment.
• Strong awareness of workplace safety and hazard recognition in welding and fabrication environments.
• Organizational skills to maintain inventory counts and manage weld shop supplies effectively.
• Willingness to perform routine duties, housekeeping, and equipment care to keep the shop in good working order.

This position is based in a shop and yard setting that includes both indoor and outdoor work. You will work in all weather conditions, and the shop can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The role involves regular use of welding equipment, gas welding tools, MIG and TIG welding machines, cranes, and hi-lo equipment. You will work around heavy equipment, yard cranes, rolling stock, and plant machinery, following safety procedures and confined space guidelines where applicable. The environment is hands-on and physically active, with an expectation of appropriate work attire suitable for welding, fabrication, and working in varying temperatures and conditions.

This is a Contract position based out of Trenton, MI.

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $24.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Trenton,MI.
