Patient Finance Specialist, Admitting, Per Diem, Flexible Shifts, Jackson South M.C.

Position Overview Patient Finance Specialist responsible for timely and accurate patient registration. Interviews patients for all pertinent account information and verifies insurance coverage. Location: Miami, FL. Schedule: On Call/Pool Admitting. Responsibilities Interview patients and family or other responsible parties at workstation or bedside to obtain all necessary account information. Perform bedside registration using carts and computers on wheels. Obtain patient demographic, insurance, and financial information as warranted. Search MPI (Master Patient Index) completely and assign correct medical record number. Notify supervisor or designated person of any medical record number issues. Verify all insurance and obtain pre‑certification/authorization for services as warranted. Obtain proper authorization for treatment and approved codes from insurance carriers. Assign insurance plan accurately. Calculate and collect patient liable amounts. Explain services policies to patients according to JHS collection policies. Receive and process patient payments in accordance with JHS Collections Policy and Procedure – issue receipts and maintain payment integrity. Secure required signatures for treatments, release of medical information, assignment of insurance benefits and payments from legally responsible parties. Get copies of necessary patient identification and insurance cards. Scan documents in a timely manner. Answer questions and explain policies clearly. Assist patients or families with appointment scheduling as warranted. Process patient charts according to paperwork flow and established productivity standards. Produce paperwork for distribution to appropriate departments and align documents for the patient’s medical and financial files. Welcome patients and families professionally. Contact clinical staff for emergency medical needs and answer patient and visitor questions. Inform patients or their representatives of delinquent accounts and attempt to obtain payment. Check for physician orders and attach them to patient records to ensure appropriate tests are received. Guide patients to destination or refer to Guest Services Representative. Ensure timely bed assignment so patients are placed in appropriate unit based on criteria (specific to Behavioral Health Center). Work closely with unit managers to solve transfer issues related to external facilities (specific to Behavioral Health Center). Review insurance contract matrix to verify appropriate hospital placement per patient insurance plans (specific to Behavioral Health Center). Attend in‑services presentations and complete mandatory education as warranted. Attend minimum of 80 % of scheduled staff meetings. Demonstrate behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Perform all other related job duties as assigned. Experience Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience. Education High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in related field strongly preferred. Skills Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions and exercise sound independent judgment. Knowledge and skill in use of job‑appropriate technology and software applications. Credentials Valid license or certification required as needed based on the job or specialty. Working Conditions Job function is sedentary; requires sitting for extended periods. Requires frequent standing or walking, lifting up to 20 pounds, and close visual acuity for computer use and data analysis. Requires functioning in a fast‑paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations. Interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public. May expose to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other typical hospital conditions. May wear PPE such as gloves or a mask when exposed.
