Oncology Outpatient Advanced Practice Provider (APP), Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant/Associate

Advanced Practice Provider - Thoracic, Head & Neck Program

The Knight Cancer Institute Outpatient Clinics deliver comprehensive care to adult ambulatory patients diagnosed with a wide range of cancers, including solid tumors and benign hematology.

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider to join our Thoracic, Head & Neck Program.

This Clinical Associate-APP provides care in conjunction with a team comprised of physicians, APPs, RN coordinators, and other allied health professionals. APPs may practice both independently or in a shared-care model with physicians, as determined by the needs of the team. Additionally, this APP will perform procedures and may intermittently provide oversight to the infusion unit.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and demonstrate clinical knowledge and oncologic experience to support a complex patient population.

The Clinical Associate-APP delivers care aligned with a defined scope of practice in Outpatient Adult Medical Oncology, with work expectations operationalized through departmental workflows, productivity standards, and performance expectations consistent with the collective bargaining agreement and institutional policies.

This role is structured to meet contract-defined work expectations, inclusive of daytime coverage, aligned with the clinical coverage model and patient care needs of the service. A fixed schedule will be determined at the time of hire and may include evening, weekend, and holiday coverage.

Location: Center for Health & Healing, Building 2, multiple floors (primary location); Center for Health & Healing, Building 1 (for occasional procedures, as needed); Marquam Hill (for occasional procedures, as needed).

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • APP will manage their own template of patients each day, including individuals undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, research, and long-term follow-up care. Shifts may include triage, consults, pre-treatment visits, urgent visits, and follow up.
  • Work collaboratively with clinic management on process improvement projects
  • Provide education to colleagues, staff and students
  • May intermittently provide oversight of the infusion unit, responding to acute infusion reactions and urgent medical issues
  • Adhere to institutional clinical pathways, guidelines, and policies
  • After appropriate proctoring, APPs will independently perform procedures. Procedures include but are not limited to: Bone Marrow Biopsy and Aspiration, Lumbar Puncture, IT chemotherapy, Omaya, Skin Biopsy

General responsibilities:

All APPs are expected to maintain professional standards in all aspects of role performance, including consistent participation in unit and departmental meetings, routine monitoring and timely response to organizational communications (e.g., email), and adherence to established deadlines for institutional and departmental requirements.

Required Qualifications:

Experience: Minimum of 2 years APP experience in oncology. Completion of an APP Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology may substitute for two years of the required experience.

Education: Successful completion of a Master's Degree in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing in a recognized APRN specialty (Practitioner), - OR - Successful completion of a Master's Degree in Physician Assistant/Associate Studies from an accredited program.

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses: Current RN and APRN licensure with the Oregon Board of Nursing; Licensure with Washington Board of Nursing (within 90 days of start date); Current national certification in the area of specialization; Certification as indicated for the position; DEA Certification -OR- Current PA licensure with the Oregon Medical Board; PA licensure with the Washington Medical Board (within 90 days of start date); Current NCCPA Certification; DEA Certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and patient management skills; Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment; Effective communication skills, including clear, concise, and professional interaction with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams; Ability to collaborate across disciplines and contribute to coordinated, team-based care; Sound clinical judgment and decision-making, including the ability to recognize and respond to clinical deterioration; Proficiency in documentation and use of electronic health record (EHR) systems; Ability to adapt to changing clinical demands, workflows, and patient volumes; Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety and quality care; Ability to provide education to patients, families, and learners (e.g., students, trainees, new APPs); Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, and reliability in meeting responsibilities and deadlines; Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information; Commitment to continuous learning and adherence to institutional policies, standards, and evidence-based practice

Physical Demands: Must be able to travel between floors and clinical offices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current BLS or ACLS
  • Experience working with a patient population with thoracic/head/neck cancer
  • Experience working with clinical trials and experimental therapeutics
  • Experience with EPIC and Beacon
  • Hematology/Oncology certification
  • Advanced clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning in complex hematologic/oncologic malignancies and cellular therapy patients
  • Ability to recognize and manage oncologic, chemotherapy, biotherapy management, and cellular therapy-related complications), including monitoring and toxicity management
  • Strong clinical judgment and timely escalation of care for acutely ill and immunocompromised patients
  • Proficiency performing necessary procedures (e.g. bone marrow biopsies and aspirates, lumbar punctures, administration of chemotherapy
  • Effective communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams, including complex care discussions and transitions of care
  • Ability to collaborate across specialties (e.g., oncology, infectious disease, critical care, pharmacy, case management) to coordinate comprehensive care
  • Proficiency in EHR documentation, order entry, and utilization of oncology-specific treatment plans and pathways
  • Ability to educate patients, families, and learners on complex disease processes, treatments, and supportive care needs
  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety standards related to high-risk therapies and immunocompromised populations
  • Demonstrated adaptability in managing evolving therapies, protocols, and clinical workflows in cellular therapy and transplant care
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice, regulatory standards (e.g., FACT, CoC), and continuous professional development
  • Commitment to carry out job responsibilities in an effective, ethical, and professional manner
