PLUMBER IIReports To: Director of Maintenance or DesigneeDepartment: MaintenanceFLSA Status: Non-ExemptTerms of Employment: 12 MonthsSalary: In accordance with the Rutherford County Schools classified salary schedulePOSITION PURPOSEThe Plumber II performs skilled, journey-level plumbing work in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of plumbing systems throughout Rutherford County Schools facilities. The employee works with considerable independence in completing routine plumbing repairs and installations and consults with the supervisor regarding unusual, complex, or non-routine assignments.The position is responsible for helping ensure that plumbing systems are safe, functional, code-compliant, and maintained in a manner that supports the daily operation of schools and other district facilities.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESInstalls, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs water supply, drainage, waste-disposal, air, gas, and related piping systems.Diagnoses plumbing problems and determines appropriate methods of repair.Repairs and replaces plumbing fixtures, faucets, valves, toilets, sinks, water lines, drains, piping, and related equipment.Locates leaks, blockages, damaged piping, and other plumbing system failures.Performs preventive maintenance on plumbing systems and equipment.Installs new plumbing fixtures, piping, and related components as assigned.Reads and interprets work orders, specifications, diagrams, and other written instructions related to plumbing work.Uses hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and other materials and equipment commonly associated with the plumbing trade.Ensures work is performed in accordance with applicable safety requirements, plumbing codes, district procedures, and accepted trade practices.Estimates materials and supplies needed to complete assigned work and communicates material needs to the appropriate supervisor.Maintains tools, equipment, supplies, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.Responds to plumbing emergencies and other urgent maintenance needs as assigned.Coordinates plumbing work with school administrators, maintenance personnel, contractors, and other district employees when necessary.Assists with renovation, construction, and facility-improvement projects involving plumbing systems.May provide direction or assistance to other maintenance employees working on plumbing installation or repair projects.Maintains appropriate records of work performed, materials used, and repairs completed.Observes and reports conditions that may present safety, health, or facility concerns.Performs work in a manner that minimizes disruption to students, employees, and school operations.Complies with Rutherford County Schools policies, procedures, and safety requirements.Performs other related duties as assigned.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESThe employee should possess:Working knowledge of the methods and practices used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems.Working knowledge of plumbing-trade safety practices and precautions.Skill in the proper use of tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in plumbing work.Ability to diagnose plumbing problems and determine appropriate corrective action.Ability to perform routine work independently and exercise sound judgment.Ability to assume lead-worker responsibilities during plumbing repair or installation projects when assigned.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to read basic plans, diagrams, specifications, and technical information.Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, school personnel, contractors, and other employees.Ability to organize work, manage multiple assignments, and respond appropriately to emergency maintenance situations.Ability to work effectively as part of the district maintenance team.MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or GED and two years of experience in the repair, replacement, or construction of piping systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.This qualification is based directly on the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources Plumber II classification.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSValid driver's license required.Appropriate plumbing licensure or certification may be required depending upon the nature and scope of work assigned.Must maintain any licenses or certifications required to legally perform assigned duties.PHYSICAL AND WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in school buildings, mechanical areas, crawlspaces, outdoors, and other district facilities and may involve exposure to heat, cold, moisture, dust, noise, wastewater, and other conditions associated with building maintenance and plumbing work.The employee must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including activities associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems.GENERAL EXPECTATIONSThe employee is expected to:Demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.Exercise sound judgment and maintain professional conduct while working in schools and around students and staff.Follow all district safety practices and procedures.Protect district property, tools, equipment, and resources.Maintain confidentiality when appropriate.Support the mission and operational needs of Rutherford County Schools.Disclaimer: This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by an employee assigned to this position.
