Patient Services Assistant - Medical Oncology

$17.3 - $25.11 per hour

Role Overview Under limited supervision, performs a variety of clerical activities to support practice operations including customer service, managing telephone calls, scheduling, registration, and copay collections. Responsibilities Receives and screens visitors and telephone calls. Responds to general inquiries by directing to established policies and procedures. Provides customer service to patients, relays information about the Medical Center, and reminds patients of appointments. Schedules patient appointments; performs data entry of patient demographic information and insurance. Verifies insurance information and obtains required referrals before the patient’s visit. Assists patients with registration for MyChart. Manages high volume telephone calls, generating telephone encounters and routing them to providers for follow-up. Addresses all telephone messages by the end of the day. Performs pre‑registration and confirmation of patient appointments prior to service date. Checks in patients, verifies insurance, collects and scans identification and insurance cards. Manages referral work queues and schedules appointments from active referrals. Manages incoming faxes, routing results and correspondence to appropriate provider or staff; scans incoming medical records to the patient’s MRN. Handles In Basket messages from patients and providers, closing them out daily. Responds to EPIC secure chats as appropriate. Collects patient co‑payments, form fees and outstanding balances. Performs simple arithmetic, reconciles all collected monies and makes deposits. Assists with scheduling diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures according to HMO, PPO and MCO restrictions. Obtains referrals and pre‑authorizations for procedures, calling insurers or generating electronic requests. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or GED equivalency. Experience: Minimum 6 months of related experience. Skills: Customer service, knowledge of medical terminology (preferred), written & oral communication, non‑complex arithmetic, organization and prioritization, multitasking with high phone volume. Requirements Physical: Ability to sit, stand, walk and pay close attention to detail. Environment: Normal office setting with minimal noise, dust or other exposure. Flexibility: Ability to work in various practices as needed. Safety: Knowledge of patient and workforce safety relevant to job duties. Patient Population: Competency in delivering care and meeting age‑specific needs when applicable.
