About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Days Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: Required Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Must have 1 year experience and be willing to learn and ask questions. Description: Department: MedSurg Unit: Medical Surgical Number of Beds: 35 Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Generally 1:5. Some patient populations may have ratios of 1:4, such as neck dissections and facial reconstructions. Common diagnoses/types of patients include: - Orthopedic patients: total joints, ankle, knee, hip, and shoulder surgeries; traumatic fractures. - ENT patients: thyroid surgeries, laparoscopic Nissen fundoplications, neck dissections, donor site issues, new site checks with implanted dopplers. - Eyecare: Graves' disease patients undergoing muscle surgeries for eye repositioning. - Patients transferred from ED and ICU: a significant number of sepsis patients requiring high-flow oxygen. - Pediatric overflow patients: including pneumonia and orthopedic surgeries, as well as pediatric behavioral cases. All pediatric patients are treated as adults for medical emergencies. General medical surgical cases: appendectomies, cholecystectomies, pneumonia, and COPD. Specialized beds available for epilepsy patients, who are scheduled with an epileptologist and monitored via EEG and video to assess seizure activity. Most patients typically discharge by Thursday. Travelers may not receive these patients unless they specifically request them. Charge Nurse: There is a charge nurse on each shift who does not take patients. Assistance from two Assistant Managers during the day and one at night, as well as a unit-based educator present daily for support and education. Patient Care Techs are available on the unit with a ratio of 1:8. Monitoring techs: Staff must be able to read and interpret telemetry. Shifts and Scheduling: Standard shifts are from 7 am to 7 pm. Travelers will fill staffing needs, and while attempts will be made to schedule night shifts together, it is not guaranteed. Weekend Requirement: Will fill in as needed. Holiday Requirement: Will fill in as needed. Floating Requirements: Staff may float to similar units. Scrub Color/Dress Code: No specific requirements, however, attire must be clean and professional. This position is subject to a radius rule of 50 miles for residency requirements.
