About Us

Harris Construction is a commercial construction company focused on quality work, accurate budgets, and long-term client relationships. We're looking for a detail-oriented Construction Estimator to join our preconstruction team and help us win and deliver profitable projects.

Position Summary

The Construction Estimator prepares accurate, competitive cost estimates and bids for construction projects. You will review plans and specifications, perform quantity takeoffs, gather subcontractor and supplier pricing, and work closely with project managers, engineers, and executives to make sure our bids are complete and profitable.

Key Responsibilities

• Review architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and bid documents to determine project scope
• Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontracted work
• Solicit, evaluate, and compare quotes from subcontractors and suppliers
• Prepare complete bid packages, including cost breakdowns, proposals, and scope clarifications
• Develop conceptual, budget, and detailed estimates at various stages of design
• Identify project risks, scope gaps, and value-engineering opportunities
• Maintain and update cost databases, historical pricing, and productivity data
• Attend pre-bid meetings and job walks as needed
• Collaborate with project management to transition awarded projects into construction with accurate budgets
• Support change order pricing and cost tracking during construction when needed

Qualifications

Required

• 2+ years of experience in construction estimating or a related role (project engineering, project management, or field supervision)
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents
• Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software (e.g., Bluebeam, ProjectSight, Planswift, On-Screen Takeoff, Sage Estimating, or similar)
• Strong skills in Microsoft Excel
• Solid understanding of construction methods, materials, and costs
• Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time management
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work under tight bid deadlines

Preferred

• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field (equivalent experience considered)
• Experience with commercial projects
• Knowledge of local labor rates, prevailing wage requirements, and subcontractor markets
• Professional certification, such as AACE or ASPE, is a plus
