Overview The Nursing Program Coordinator plays a pivotal role in guiding pediatric cancer patients and their families through every stage of the care journey. This position ensures seamless coordination of services, promoting continuity of care while delivering compassionate, patient‑centered support. The coordinator serves as a key liaison, providing comprehensive education to patients and families, empowering them with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate complex treatment plans. They actively connect families to a broad network of support services, both community resources and specialized programs offered through Blank Children’s Hospital and UnityPoint Health–Des Moines. By fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and advocating for patient needs, the coordinator enhances the overall patient experience and contributes to improved clinical outcomes in oncology care. Use expertise in the cancer disease process to effectively communicate information to the community and patients. Develop an effective communication system with patients, community, and referring physicians. Identify and provide support to appropriate clients for cancer coordination. Coordinate different providers responsible for furnishing services needed by the patient with cancer. Connect patients, families, and staff with resources regarding cancer issues. Serve as an advocate in the community for cancer health promotion activities. Provide support and input into planning goals and objectives for care of the cancer patient at Blank. Assist in quality improvement projects and customer service excellence by exceeding expectations. Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or IA Board of Nursing approved nursing program. License(s)/Certification(s): Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa. Experience: Minimum of two years experience in hematology/oncology. Demonstrated teaching ability using developmental and adult education principles. Physical capability: Level 2; light work – able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly.
