Staff Software Engineer, Electron & Browser Infrastructure - Slack Desktop

Slack is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Desktop team within the Architecture & Systems organization. This role focuses on the Desktop Framework – the architectural foundation that underpins the Slack desktop client across all platforms. Responsibilities Lead cross‑functional initiatives across Electron and Slack to increase developer productivity, OS‑level stability, performance, or security. Contribute to key architectural decisions to adapt existing frontend and desktop infrastructure for new product features. Identify and resolve ambiguous problems, such as framework migrations or rendering bottlenecks, before they become visible to leadership. Maintain and improve core systems that power the Slack desktop client and Electron framework, including infrastructure and tooling. Mentor engineers across the organization, building a safe learning space and coaching future leaders. Collaborate with teammates across engineering to define and solve strategically important initiatives, de‑escalate conflicts and drive consensus. Qualifications 10+ years of experience writing client‑side code (React + TypeScript) for modern web applications at scale. Deep Chromium experience or contribution to large‑scale open‑source projects. Experience working in a large‑scale shared codebase with hundreds of contributors, establishing patterns for frictionless collaboration. Strong ability to write maintainable, testable, scalable code. Expertise in building complex systems and tooling, with leadership in technical design. Exceptional communication skills to align technical infrastructure with company goals. Experience with performance profiling and debugging tools for web‑based desktop applications. Familiarity with desktop development and the ability to explain technical trade‑offs. Commitment to proactive, constructive feedback and self‑improvement. Strong enthusiasm for teaching and learning in a collaborative environment. Empathy and a focus on people‑centric solutions. Bonus Points Contributing to engineering reputation externally (blog posts, speaking, open‑source contributions). Experience developing on Windows and maintaining build infrastructure for Windows desktop applications. Experience in fast‑paced, dynamic product development environments.
