Our rich diversity of people and ideas makes us a stronger, more innovative organization.Job SummaryWe are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Traffic Control Area Manager to lead and grow our traffic-control operations in Birmingham and throughout the Alabama market. This position will have responsibility for both day-to-day operations and business growth. The Area Manager will oversee traffic-control crews, scheduling, safety, equipment, customer relationships, financial performance, and the continued development of new business opportunities. The ideal candidate is not only an experienced operations leader but someone who understands the local construction and utility market, can build strong customer relationships, and is motivated to develop a growing traffic-control operation.Main ResponsibilitiesManage daily traffic-control operations throughout the Birmingham market. Oversee Traffic Control Technicians, Flaggers, Crew Leads, and field operations. Coordinate scheduling and deployment of crews, trucks, and traffic-control equipment. Ensure traffic-control operations comply with company safety requirements and applicable ALDOT/MUTCD standards. Review staffing levels, equipment utilization, overtime, and operational efficiency. Conduct field visits and audits to ensure work is being performed safely and efficiently. Recruit, train, develop, and retain field employees as the operation grows. Maintain appropriate staffing levels based on customer demand and projected workload. Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, contractors, utilities, municipalities, and internal partners. Identify and pursue new traffic-control opportunities throughout Alabama. Assist with customer proposals, pricing, estimates, bids, and RFP opportunities. Develop relationships with utility contractors, general contractors, roadway contractors, municipalities, and other potential customers. Participate in customer meetings, pre-construction meetings, and business-development activities. Monitor revenue, labor costs, equipment costs, operating income, and overall area financial performance. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and annual growth planning. Monitor accounts receivable, billing issues, and job profitability as needed. Ensure company vehicles, equipment, signs, barricades, and traffic-control devices are properly maintained and utilized. Develop Crew Leads and Supervisors who can support continued expansion into additional markets. Maintain a strong safety culture and hold employees accountable for company and customer safety expectations.Business Development ResponsibilitiesA key component of this position is growing the Alabama traffic-control business. The Area Manager will be expected to: Develop new customer relationships throughout Birmingham and surrounding markets. Identify upcoming projects, bids, RFPs, and subcontracting opportunities. Build relationships with utility companies and utility contractors. Develop relationships with roadway, civil, telecommunications, and infrastructure contractors. Expand existing customer accounts by providing reliable service and identifying additional opportunities. Participate in industry meetings, customer events, and networking opportunities. Work with company leadership to develop competitive pricing and growth strategies. Help establish the company as a preferred traffic-control provider throughout Alabama. Develop a long-term pipeline of recurring and contract-based traffic-control work.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications: 5+ years of experience in traffic control, roadway construction, utility construction, civil construction, or a closely related field preferred. Previous supervisory or operations-management experience. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple crews and projects simultaneously. Strong understanding of temporary traffic-control and work-zone safety. Experience with scheduling, labor management, equipment management, and field operations. Strong customer-service and relationship-building skills. Ability to understand job costs, budgets, margins, and operational financial performance. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Ability to travel throughout Alabama as required. Ability to respond to operational issues outside normal business hours when necessary. Preferred Qualifications Existing relationships within the Alabama utility, roadway, civil, or construction markets. Previous business-development or sales experience within traffic control or construction services. Experience estimating or pricing traffic-control services. Experience responding to RFPs and developing customer proposals. Knowledge of ALDOT and MUTCD temporary traffic-control requirements. ATSSA Traffic Control Technician (TCT) certification. ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certification. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction certification. Experience managing the financial performance of a branch, area, or operating unit.Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentThis job operates in a field environment. This role routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting. Also, working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more or 20 inches or less, with the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Precise hand-eye coordination.
