Job Summary/Basic Functions The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Police Officer with University Police. Primary responsibilities of police officers include, but are not limited to: Performs law enforcement, crime prevention, security and related public safety functions within state controlled property. To protect life, property and enforce the rules and regulations of University of Mary Washington as well as the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia in such a manner which supports the mission of the University. Provide a safe environment which is conducive to the education of, and promotes harmony for, all members of the University community. Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications Knowledge of and experience in the principles and techniques of law enforcement, security, crime detection and prevention, as well as criminal investigation. Proficiency with and experience in the use of police equipment relevant to the job; to include the use of carried weapons. Demonstrated ability to communicate both orally and in writing, with diverse groups of employees, students and members of the general public. Ability to interpret laws, polices, and regulations governing the operation of the institution. Ability to interpret laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America. Required Experience Experience in Law Enforcement or a related field. Required Education Graduation from a high school or equivalency. Required Licensure Must possess a valid Driver’s License to operate a University/state owned or leased vehicle. Mandatory certification by the Department of Criminal Justice Services as a Law Enforcement Officer. Excluding currentUMW employees, selected candidate(s) must successfully pass a criminal history background check. Employment verification will be conducted to include current/previous supervisory employment reference checks. Other financial, credit, driving, background checks or completion of Statement of Economic Interests may be required for certain positions.
