Job Description:

SALARY: $46,171.01 - $64,456.98 / Annually

Commensurate with experience. Step Salary System to be awarded annually on the anniversary date of hire and would typically start at Step 1. Please note the salary range indicated is firm.

REPORTS TO: Under the general supervision of the Police Chief or his designee, the employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods. The employee is expected to recognize instances which are out of the ordinary and which do not fall within existing instructions; the employee is then expected to seek advice and further instructions. Reviews and checks of the employee's work are applied to an extent sufficient to keep the supervisor aware of progress, and to insure that completed work and methods used are technically accurate and that instructions are being followed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: N/A

Statement of Duties: This employee answers all emergency and non-emergency calls that come into the department; prioritizes calls for entry into the IMC system; the employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

• ETDs answer all lines at the police department, 911 and business lines and assess the nature of the calls, enter all appropriate information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. Calls are transferred to other agencies when necessary.
• ETDs are required to ask a series of question to ensure the safety of the caller and the safety of the officers responding to the call.
• ETDs are required to ping cell phones in emergency situations, helping the officers on the road to locate a suspect or a victim.
• ETDs are trained to answer TTY calls for the hearing impaired callers.
• ETDs need to log certain information into system to make officers aware of possible pending situations for future calls.
• ETDs are trained to deal with high stress calls, to remain calm and help calm the caller through these situation, e.g. suicidal callers, missing children or elderly.
• ETDs are required to follow Police Policies, Guidecards, and State 911 policies and procedures in a variety of call handling situations.

Requirements:

Confidentiality: The employee has regular access to confidential information such as department records including criminal records/investigation in accordance with the State Public Records law.

Accountability: Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment could result in legal repercussions, adverse public relations, danger to public safety and jeopardize programs.

Judgment: The work requires examining, analyzing and evaluating facts and circumstances surrounding individual problems, situations, or transactions, and determining actions to be taken within the limits of standard or accepted practices. Guidelines include a large body of policies, practices, and precedents, which may be complex or conflicting, at times. Judgment is used in analyzing specific situations to determine appropriate actions. Employee is expected to weigh efficiency and relative priorities in conjunction with procedural concerns in decision making. Requires understanding, interpreting and applying complex federal, state and local regulations.

Complexity: The work consists of a variety of duties which generally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.

Work Environment: The work environment involves everyday discomforts of a municipal office subject to frequent interruptions. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.

Nature and Purpose of Public Contact: Relationships with co-workers and the public involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems. More than ordinary courtesy, tact, and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints or deal with hostile, uncooperative or uninformed persons.

Occupational Risk: Duties of the job present little potential for injury to the employee. Risk exposure is similar to that found in typical office settings.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Knowledge: Some general knowledge of the department and office operations.

Ability: Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with the public and other personnel, perform multiple tasks and maintain confidential information; ability to acquire knowledge of laws and regulations pertinent to position functions.

Skills: Proficient computer skills, mathematical skills, written and oral communication skills; strong customer service skills; excellent writing skills.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Physical Demands: Little or no physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such as books, office equipment and computer paper.

Motor Skills: Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Examples include using a personal computer.

Visual/Auditory Skills: The employee is required to constantly read documents, personal computer screens and written reports for general understanding and routinely for analytical purposes. The employee must have the auditory ability to listen and comprehend. The employee is not regularly required to determine color differences.
