Associate General Counsel

Job Summary: Performs a variety of legal work and participates in the performance of complex legal analysis in both general and transactional legal work, including employment law, health law, conflicts of interest, procurement, open‑records law, contract drafting and review, immigration, higher education law, legal research, policy review, and health care compliance issues. Participates in supporting and supervising litigation as assigned. Responsibilities Anticipates, identifies, and resolves legal issues in both transactional and general legal matters, including health‑care related issues. Drafts, reviews, negotiates, and advises on contracts involving software licenses, equipment purchases, professional services, employment, research, and related matters. Advises university leaders on employment, faculty, and student matters and provides advice for administrative hearings and litigation. Oversees legal representation in litigation and negotiates settlements on behalf of the university. Advises on responses to records requests under state and federal law. Drafts, reviews, and advises on policies, procedures, regulations, bylaws, and other governing documents. Educates and trains the university community on legal issues. Conducts and supervises legal research and analysis. Prepares written and verbal legal advice and opinions of counsel. Coordinates legal services across departments and divisions within legal specialties. Supervises support staff, junior attorneys, and outside counsel on a project basis. Minimum Qualifications Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. Admission to the Utah State bar association. Demonstrated organizational, effective verbal and written communication, and human relations skills. Preferences Two or more years of experience in private or university‑based law practice (judicial clerkship can substitute for one or more years of practice). Experience in transactions, healthcare (Stark and Anti‑Kickback laws, HIPAA), employment law, employment‑based immigration, tax law related to governmental employment benefits and tax‑exempt organizations, intellectual property, legislative processes, open records law, or higher education operations. Excellent academic record and related experience preferred. This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
