The Law Enforcement/Campus Resource Officer must meet the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards ( MCOLES ) certification. This position works to educate the campus community regarding safety and security, minimize risk for the college, enforce all college policies and procedures, and enforce the laws of the State of Michigan. These responsibilities are performed ethically and consistently with the college’s mission, vision, and values, including diversity, equality, and inclusion. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Establish a culture on campus where the public safety department is part of the community and works closely with community members to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Provide campus patrols through foot patrol and motor vehicle operation (where applicable). Perform escorts for students and employees to their cars or from building to building. Provide security for dignitaries and other visitors to the College. Investigate and file remedial reports of security and safety concerns involving building structures, yards, and parking lots on campus. Maintain and utilize applicable security systems such as but not limited to card access systems, CCTV , key control, and radio communications as assigned. Provide medical services such as first aid, CPR , and AED as needed and as trained. Enforce college rules and regulations on campus, which include conducting investigations and completing/filing necessary documentation. Maintain building security by locking and unlocking College buildings and disarming and arming security alarms according to scheduled times. Coordinate with non-sworn public safety staff. Regulation and monitoring of parking conditions. Assisting students and employees who are locked out of their vehicles or classrooms and helping with jump starts. Report fire and safety hazards on campus. Provide lost and found property services. Develop a basic understanding of the operation of building mechanical systems to facilitate communication and problem reporting to the Facilities department. Write up and route repair requisitions as needed. Provide GREAT customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of our customers. Demonstrate and promote the college values. Broad knowledge of college policies and procedures, including specialized knowledge of faculty, staff, and student issues. Supervise and review the performance of subordinate personnel and ensure that work assignments are carried out properly and efficiently in compliance with department procedures. Regular attendance on campus is required for this position. Other duties as assigned. Hours/Schedule: In general, officers will be scheduled to work 8-hour shifts, day or afternoon, from Monday – Saturday. Additional hours during peak times or as required, and subject to 24-hour on-call for emergencies. Minimum Qualifications Associate degree OR equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered. Possess a valid Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards ( MCOLES ) police certification or have met the requirements of MCOLES certification upon hire. Successfully pass a thorough background investigation, drug screening, psychological exam, and physical examination. Extensive knowledge and experience in police department operations should include investigations, patrol, community policing, evidence collection, leadership, and modern-day policing principles. Must maintain an acceptable driving record as required by the college insurer. Ability to professionally and confidentially investigate sensitive issues at all campus levels and effectively present findings. Ability to work independently without direct supervision. Service-oriented. Ability to have an exceptional customer service attitude at all times. Demonstrated ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation, and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, both written and oral, which transcend diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and relate well to students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining appropriate confidentiality. Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the College. Must be able to work an irregular schedule, evenings and all days of the week as needed, additional hours during peak times or as required, and subject to 24-hour on-call for emergencies. Must be able to hear, speak, and see to communicate with the general public. Must also have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue, and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls as well as running, bending, twisting, reaching, crawling through tight spaces, kneeling in confined areas, sitting for prolonged periods, moving/pushing/pulling, or lifting heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs. Additional Preferred Qualifications Experience as a law enforcement officer OR experience working in a college/university as a non-sworn public safety officer. Experience working in a school environment, training as a school resource officer, and certification through the National Association of School Resource Officers ( NASRO ). Certification in defensive tactics and medical services such as first aid, CPR , and AED . Salary Information The starting salary is $27/hour. Current Washtenaw Community College Employees Salary is determined by BOT Policy 5005***An Administrative Group employee whose job has been reclassified or who is promoted to a new position shall have his/her salary set at the new salary range minimum or at 10% above current salary, whichever is greater.
