School of Medicine and Public Health / Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care

The Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care at UW-Madison includes more than 60 faculty, 30 Advanced Practice Providers, and 19 Fellows. The division's faculty lead cutting-edge basic, translational and clinical research programs. This research encompasses cancer biology, cancer prevention, screening and treatment, as well as survivorship and palliative care for patients impacted by solid tumors, benign and malignant hematologic conditions, and those requiring stem cell transplant or cellular therapies.

Our stem cell transplant program has been FACT accredited since 2001, performing about 140-180 SCT yearly (60-70 allo-SCT yearly and 80-100 auto-SCT year) in recent years. We are a certified treatment center for all the FDA-approved commercial CART products for ALL, variety of lymphomas and multiple myeloma. Our CART patient volume had been doubling in the past 3 years, and we anticipate reaching 80-100 CART treatments per year with further growth in the coming years. In addition, we are actively participating in significant number of consortium and industry-sponsored cell therapy trials. We are conducting novel investigator-initiated therapeutic trials such as using alpha/beta T cell depleted haploidentical transplantation for the treatment of relapsed pediatric neuroblastoma and sarcomas. Our program is also developing institutional cell therapy trials including CRISPR/Cas9 generated CAR T cells for solid tumors and CNS malignancies, and ex vivo activated/expanded NK cells to treat neuroblastoma and osteogenic sarcoma, alpha/beta T cell and B cell depleted prophylactic donor lymphocyte infusion to prevent disease relapse after allo-SCT for patients with high risk of disease relapse. Additional investigator-initiated trials will be planned in collaboration with the excellent basic and translational researchers within the division, department and the institution.

The University of Wisconsin has multiple well-established hematology initiatives including an endowed comprehensive sickle cell disease program, a comprehensive bleeding disorders program, and an inherited bone marrow failure program. The sickle cell disease program is a member of the National Alliance of Sickle Cell Centers. The university also hosts the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR), funded by a National Institutes of Health Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), providing opportunities for junior and mid-career faculty to develop and nurture research skills and to provide mentorship. The division also holds a hematology-specific T32 training grant to mentor pre- and post-doctoral candidates pursuing hematology research. Outside of the division, faculty can collaborate with university colleagues through the Wisconsin Blood Cancer Research Institute (WBCRI) and the Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC).

The candidate will have also access to many shared resources and opportunities to collaborate with basic, translational and clinical researchers at the NCI-designated UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC), the VA Hospital and throughout the UW-Madison campus. Administrative duties including e-Consults, committees and community service may be added as appropriate to the interests of the successful candidate.

The candidate will lead dedicated disease-specific research staff and have access to substantial programmatic research funds. Clinical research is conducted in the UWCCC by 18 multi-disciplinary Disease Oriented Teams and is supported by the UWCCC Clinical Research Office. Over 170 UWCCC investigators regularly enroll patients to therapeutic intervention trials at our two UWCCC clinical sites. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue and secure independent funding to continue/develop their research.

UW is an affiliate member of the BMT Clinical Trials Network and a member of the NCCN, ECOG- ACRIN, Alliance, BigTen Cancer Research Consortium, Wisconsin Oncology Network (WON) and Wisconsin Association of Hematology and Oncology (WAHO).

The successful candidate will join a world-class institution that encourages, values, and supports interdisciplinary basic, clinical and population health research, and attracts scholars and students from around the world.
