Job Duties:

The Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care seeks a physician scientist, MD or MD/PhD, in clinical, translational or basic science research to join our team. The physician scientist will be expected to engage in active collaborative research and build clinical and/or translational research in the division and obtain/maintain independent extramural funding.

• This position is full or part time, 80%-100%
• This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.
• This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations.
• The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.
• Applicants for this position will be considered for the titles: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor on the tenure track.

Key Job Responsibilities:

• 25-30%; Clinical expectations include direct patient care at UW Health locations, including ambulatory, inpatient and consult service attending.
• 70-75%; Academic expectations include protected time to develop a research program or teaching program and to engage in scholarly activities.
• Teaching medical students, residents, and fellows within the context of your clinical practice
• Proactively supporting efforts to improve diversity in clinical trial participants
• Participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

The Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care at UW-Madison includes over 60 faculty, more than 40 Advanced Practice Providers, and 16 Fellows. The division's faculty lead cutting-edge basic and translational research programs in classical and malignant hematology, cellular therapy, cancer biology, cancer prevention and screening and medical oncology. The Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology & Palliative Care is part of the Department of Medicine and the NCI- designated UW Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Division is active in all phases of cancer research, from prevention, screening, cancer therapy, development and evaluation, survivorship and palliative care. Our stem cell transplant program has been FACT accredited since 2001, performing about 140-180 SCT yearly (60-70 allo-SCT yearly and 80-100 auto-SCT year) in recent years. We are a certified treatment center for all the FDA-approved commercial CART products for ALL, variety of lymphomas and multiple myeloma. Our CART patient volume had been doubling in the past 3 years, and we anticipate reaching 80-100 CART treatments per year with further growth in the coming years. In addition, we are actively participating in significant number of consortium and industry-sponsored cell therapy trials. We are conducting novel investigator-initiated therapeutic trials such as using alpha/beta T cell depleted haploidentical transplantation for the treatment of relapsed pediatric neuroblastoma and sarcomas. Our program is also developing institutional cell therapy trials including CRISPR/Cas9 generated CAR T cells for solid tumors and CNS malignancies, and ex vivo activated/expanded NK cells to treat neuroblastoma and osteogenic sarcoma, alpha/beta T cell and B cell depleted prophylactic donor lymphocyte infusion to prevent disease relapse after allo-SCT for patients with high risk of disease relapse. Additional investigator-initiated trials will be planned in collaboration with the excellent basic and translational researchers within the division, department and the institution.

Clinical research is conducted in the UWCCC by 18 multi-disciplinary Disease Oriented Teams and is supported by the UWCCC Clinical Research Central Office on the main campus. Over 170 UWCCC investigators regularly enroll patients to therapeutic intervention trials at our UWCCC clinical sites. We are a member of the NCCN, ECOG- ACRIN, Alliance, BigTen Cancer Research Consortium, Wisconsin Oncology Network (WON) and Wisconsin Association of Hematology and Oncology (WAHO).

The candidate will have also access to many shared resources and opportunities to collaborate with basic, translational and clinical researchers at the NCI-designated UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC), the VA Hospital and throughout the UW-Madison campus. Administrative duties including e-Consults, committees and community service may be added as appropriate to the interests of the successful candidate.

Required Qualifications:

• Board certification or board eligibility in Hematology/Oncology or Medical Oncology is required by the appointment start date.
• American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Certification required.
• Candidate is required to have a Wisconsin medical license by the appointment start date.
• Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges by the appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in an academic medical setting preferred.
• For an appointment as tenure track faculty, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines on the tenure track.
• Research and clinical responsibilities with interest in hematologic conditions.
• Experience in clinical, translational or basic science research, with a track record of successful publications in peer reviewed journals, strong written and verbal communication skills and evidence of excellence in teaching. The physician scientist will be expected to engage in active collaborative research and build clinical and/or translational research in the division, as well as obtain/maintain independent extramural funding. Through these efforts, the ability to enhance national recognition for our division and the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center.

MD, DO, or equivalent is required
