Availability: Availability to support AMC during regular business hours across US continental timezones and attend client meetings
Salary: $55-80/hour
Position Summary: Grant Writers (GW) at AMC are responsible for making significant contributions to our clients' work and to the communities they support through skillfully crafting grants. The GW will work collaboratively with the AMC team to coordinate grant-related activities, communicate with clients, assist with research, write compelling proposals, and complete other grants-related work as needed. The GW is evaluated based on how they carry out these responsibilities; overall client and employee satisfaction as measured by formal and informal client and team feedback; and the progress they have made towards the performance goals outlined in their annual goal-setting worksheets.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
- Write and prepare 10-15 foundation grant products per month and/or the equivalent in public grants in accordance with the guidelines and requirements of each funding source. Depending upon the month and project load, this involves approximately 40 -100 hours of writing and editing per month
- Craft persuasive narratives that effectively communicate the nonprofit's goals, objectives, and impact to potential funders.
- Utilize AMC time-tracking software (Harvest), project management software (Asana), and keep their AMC Google Calendar up to date for scheduling purposes.
- Collaborate with Lead Consultants, Development Coordinators, and other team members to gather information and data necessary for grant applications.
- Analyze the financial aspects of grant opportunities, assess their feasibility, and ensure alignment with the client's financial goals.
- Conduct research to identify potential grant opportunities that align with the client's mission and projects.
- Stay up-to-date with available grants from government agencies, foundations, and other funding sources
- Other duties as determined by the client.
Key Competencies and Essential Job Functions
Grant Writing Expertise: You have a deep understanding of the grant writing process, including research, proposal development, and deadlines management. You are skilled at crafting clear and compelling narratives, aligning proposals with funding source priorities, and meeting submission requirements. Your expertise extends to various types of grants, such as State, Local and Federal grants, and foundation and corporate grants.
Fundraising Knowledge: You understand the broader context of fundraising within the nonprofit sector. You are familiar with different fundraising strategies and approaches, as your work often involves various fundraising efforts, such as major gift solicitation, donor relations, and event planning.
Research and Data Analysis: You are a proficient researcher who can identify grant opportunities, assess eligibility, and gather relevant data and evidence to support grant proposals. You are skilled in the data analysis necessary to assess an organization's performance and impact for reporting and proposal development.
Project Management and Collaboration: You can coordinate with various stakeholders, such as our client’s program managers, finance teams, and the like. You are competent in the project management skills that are required for ensuring that grant applications are well-organized and submitted on time. You possess strong collaboration skills that allow you to work with diverse teams to gather information and insights.
Compliance and Reporting: You are well-versed in the compliance requirements of different grantors and are capable of developing reporting systems that capture and communicate the impact and outcomes of funded projects. You have a strong attention to detail that allows you to ensure that grant reports are accurate, thorough, and submitted according to deadlines.
Grant Program Budgets: You will help manage grant program finances, including budget development, monitoring, and compliance. Collaborating with lead consultants, you'll contribute to proposal development, provide accurate financial reports, and ensure the organization meets its mission within budget constraints. Strong financial management, compliance expertise, and effective communication are key to success in this role.
Grant Prospect Research: You must excel in Grant Prospect Research, demonstrating the ability to identify and evaluate potential funding sources aligned with our client’s missions. This involves staying informed about grant-making organizations, understanding their priorities, and using this information to create a targeted grant-seeking strategy. Strong analytical skills and proficiency in research tools are crucial for success in this role.
Software Literacy & Technology: You are comfortable using all of AMC’s and AMC clients’ software platforms (Asana, Google Workplace, Foundation Directory Online, Salesforce, Sharepoint, Instrumentl, Grantstation, Dropbox, etc.) and navigate other online platforms effectively. You are able to maneuver with ease across and between systems. Additionally, you should be comfortable with and able to adopt new technologies, including but not limited to AI and LLMs.
Time and Self-Management: You are adept at time and self-management. You possess the ability to prioritize tasks effectively, juggling multiple deadlines and projects simultaneously. You employ efficient time management practices and work to ensure that grant proposals are developed meticulously and submitted punctually. You have the ability to self-manage which allows you to be productive and focused amidst competing responsibilities. Additionally, you have the capacity to set achievable goals, maintain momentum, and adapt to shifting priorities all of which are crucial to success. You have a proactive approach to time and self-management which enhances your performance and contributes to the overall efficiency and success of grant-seeking endeavors.
Other Information
Work Environment: This position leads teams and works with clients across multiple U.S. time zones. Professionalism and discretion are required. This role routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. The essential functions of the job require that the individual working in this position remain standing or sitting in a stationary position for most of the day and move about within an office environment to access file cabinets and the aforementioned office equipment.

Compensation and Benefits
This is a freelance, independent contractor position full-time with an hourly rate of approximately $55-80/hour. The individual will perform services as a self-employed professional and is not an employee of the organization. As an independent contractor, the individual is not eligible for employee benefits and is responsible for all applicable taxes, insurance, licenses, and permits required to perform the services. Nothing in this role should be construed as creating an employer-employee relationship, partnership, or joint venture.
