General Summary:

The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach social work courses and to provide oversight of the field education component of BSW requirements. In summary, this includes coordination of departmental activities; accreditation standards; maintenance of departmental records; development of course content, syllabi, and field assessment instruments, teaching, student advising, and mentoring; preparation of schedules, catalog sections, and assessment reports; support activities and committees for the college.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching

  • Instruct Chemical Dependency and/or Social Work courses in an on-line format and instruct face to face courses as necessary.
  • Oversee the timely and accurate preparation and updating of Chemical Dependency courses in alignment with state requirements.
  • Establish, develop, monitor, and evaluate student progress.
  • Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by SKC.
  • Develop on-line lecture and teaching strategies to enhance teaching effectiveness with diverse student population.
  • Develop classes that encourage student collaboration, self-efficacy, responsibility, professionalism, and writing skills for application in the field of Chemical Dependency and Social Work.
  • Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.
  • Inform students of their progress by promptly returning assignments, quizzes, and examinations.
  • Compile, administer and grade instruments that evaluate student progress.
  • Encourage student use of the Library, the Writing Center, the Wellness Center, Student Success, tutoring services, and other supportive services.
  • Integrate culturally responsive materials into coursework, with a focus on issues related to the Native American experience, especially those of the Kootenai, Pend d’ Oreille, and Salish Tribes of the Flathead Reservation, as well as the Tribes of Montana.
  • Maintain current knowledge and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility; integrate innovations and new developments of the field into curriculum and class content.
  • Provide support and substitute for colleagues when necessary.

Advising

  • Provide in-office advising hours at least 6 hours per week; post designated hours outside office at begnning of quarter.
  • Provide advising around academic skills and development, as well as support around career development and exploration in the field of social work.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and disabilities.

Other Duties:

  • Provide a safe environment for students and be responsible for the security of assigned equipment, materials and classrooms.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development. May include but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, etc.
  • Foster a positive and professional working environment.
  • Assist Department Director and other Department faculty and staff with accreditation requirements for BSW program
  • Collaborate with Department Director and other Department faculty and staff to support course and curriculum development, program review, development of student learning objectives, and assessment, research and special projects as needed in the department.
  • Represent the program, department and agency in a positive and professional manner at all times.
  • Meet record keeping obligations on time according to SKC and Department policy (e.g. grades, rosters, textbook orders, requisitions, time cards).
  • Quality Improvement: Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned.
  • At all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with students, supervisors, colleagues, college administrators and the community.
  • Other duties as assigned by Department Director.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • MSW degree (or ability to complete within two years from date of hire) from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in professional writing and oral presentations.
  • Experience working with Native American populations.
  • Proficient in PowerPoint and MS Office applications.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work professionally and cooperatively with faculty, staff and both internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or skill teaching at the undergraduate level; knowledge of academic/student affairs
  • Experience in student advising and mentoring
  • Ability to use and teach students to use various technologies.
  • Knowledge of Chemical Dependency program requirements, including monitoring and evaluating program outcomes.
  • An ideal candidate is energetic, creative, self-directed, and able to problem-solve independently, and work collaboratively in a team setting.
