Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Overview An externship experience at an NVA hospital allows veterinary students to understand the day-to-day operations of a practice and gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. NVA hospitals share a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and exceptional service to animals and the people who love them. Responsibilities Students work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gather patient histories, perform physical examinations, create treatment plans, conduct diagnostics, provide dentistry services, observe or assist in surgical procedures, and manage patients medically. Students also practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Program Details Externals generally attend the Egan Animal Hospital for two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Benefits Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
