Explore All Benefits Job Summary The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional practitioner who manages and directs nursing care activities in the areas of cath lab and interventional radiology. Must be energetic and highly motivated to support the success of Saint Louis University Hospital. Job Responsibilities Assessment Perform comprehensive nursing assessment as the database. Complete assessment of new admission or transfer upon arrival to PACU. Accurately perform and document patient assessments. Provide timely ongoing patient reassessment documenting pertinent observations. Planning Establish and coordinate a plan of care based on analysis of initial assessment data, patient diagnosis, and physician orders. Identify patient care needs. Formulate nursing interventions to achieve desired patient outcomes. Initiate individualized care plans. Collaborate with appropriate health team members for coordination of daily plan of care. Implementation Coordinate, communicate and document patient care with other disciplines. Provide and document patient education and discharge planning on PACU flow sheet. Review and initiate physician orders accurately and in a timely manner. Recognize changes in patient's condition and take appropriate nursing actions. Adhere to medication and parenteral therapy administration and documentation per policy guidelines. Perform blood-drawing technique to obtain lab specimens including blood cultures. Notify anesthesia and surgical physicians of significant changes in patient condition. Assist physicians with procedures, examinations, and other processes related to patient care. Evaluation Document effectiveness of nursing care and modify plan of care as patient progresses toward expected outcomes. Perform and document ongoing evaluation of effectiveness of care based on assessment data, nursing interventions, patient response to medications, treatments, and procedures. Evaluate and document effectiveness of patient education including level of understanding. Evaluate plan of care and modify as indicated. Evaluate effectiveness of pain medication and take appropriate nursing action. Professional/Leadership Participate in additional learning experiences to increase professional competence. Engage in committee membership, staff meetings, mandatory in-services, and other educational programs. Evaluate self and peer performance, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. Arrive on time and begin duties promptly at start of shift. Serve as a resource person to co-workers, patients/families, medical staff, and ancillary personnel. Identify problems, gather pertinent data, suggest solutions, communicate with appropriate authority, and work toward resolution. Direct care delivered by Care Partners. Adhere to customer service standards. Safety/Infection Control Practice universal precautions and dispose of hazardous waste per established guidelines. Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment. Keep environment clutter-free and minimize background noise. Adhere to dress code. Report risk-management concerns. Complete all annual mandatory requirements: safety/fire, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous communication, TB, department specific, age appropriate care (for clinical staff only), EMTALA. Service Excellence Demonstrate care and courtesy. Provide prompt, respectful, courteous service. Meet physical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional needs of patients and families. Respond promptly to patient needs. Apologize for mix-ups and delays. Listen to patient/family concerns and address needs. Explain procedures and education clearly. Allow time for questions. Demonstrate competence and collaboration. Provide accurate report. Provide quality care per standards. Share knowledge to facilitate workflow and continuity. Provide cost-effective services. Use resources wisely. Recommend practice changes that increase efficiency and minimize waste. Minimize overtime and use time well. Quality Improvement Assist in developing unit-based PI plan. Collect PI data as assigned. Participate in discussion of PI outcomes. Collaborate in developing and implementing action plans. Participate in research activities on the nursing unit. Specialized Care Restraint care: Initiate, evaluate alternatives, apply restraints, monitor patient response, provide care during restraint, release restraint promptly. Pain management: Assess pain presence, incorporate patient’s cultural/spiritual beliefs, implement techniques, involve family, consider alternative methods. Abuse assessment: Recognize abuse criteria, report signs, recommend appropriate consultations. Age Appropriate Care Provide age-appropriate care to infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Demonstrate knowledge and skills of normal growth & development. Interpret age-specific data to identify patient needs. Use communication skills appropriate to age group. Involve family or significant other in decision making. Provide services needed for the age groups routinely served. Job Specifications Minimum Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or educational equivalency for licensing. Minimum Experience: One year medical-surgical experience required; critical care or post-anesthesia care experience preferred. Required Course: ALS. Working Conditions: Regular exposure to risk of blood-borne diseases. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Exposure to unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries, and illness. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergencies or crisis situations; may perform emergency care. Subject to irregular hours. Pressure due to multiple competing demands. Exposure to latex and risk of developing ... Physical Requirements: Prolonged standing, extensive or considerable walking. Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and pull 100 pounds. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
