Tech Lead

Role Description

The Tech Lead is the engineering anchor for both Fool.com and Motley Fool Money, responsible for setting technical direction, maintaining production health, and enhancing the skills of the engineering team. The role involves both coding and leadership on a weekly basis.

• Own the technical direction for Fool.com and Motley Fool Money, balancing product velocity and long-term code health.
• Stay hands-on: writing code, reviewing PRs, and pairing with your team daily.
• Mentor and grow your direct reports through 1:1s, technical coaching, and career development conversations.
• Own production reliability for both platforms: incident response, observability, and continuous improvement of monitoring and alerting.
• Partner with product, design, marketing, and business unit leadership to translate business goals into technical strategy.
• Drive AI integration thoughtfully, both in production features and in how the team builds software.
• Maintain and evolve engineering standards, deployment processes, and tooling that keep the team shipping confidently.
• Collaborate across business units to align technical decisions with broader company direction.

The rough shape of your week: 25% hands-on coding and code review, 25% technical leadership and system design, 25% people leadership, 25% cross-functional collaboration and incident response.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a tech lead or senior+ capacity.
• Fluent in Python with real production experience in Django.
• Wagtail experience is a plus.
• Ability to navigate and contribute to a Next.js codebase.
• Deep understanding of the request/response cycle, REST API design, and web applications.
• Experience with AWS services and modern observability tooling (Datadog, Sentry, or equivalents) in production.
• Track record of mentoring and growing engineers, both technically and personally.
• Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into production applications.
• Bonus points for experience leading high-traffic consumer web platforms and familiarity with content-driven sites.
• Comfort with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) and modern testing approaches (Playwright or similar).

Annual Pay Range

$200,000 — $230,000 USD
