Electrical Design Engineer

Rate Range: $50/hour to $60/hour; The rate may be negotiable based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.

Electrical Design Engineer

Key Responsibilities

• Hardware Architecture & Schematic Redesign: Analyze existing electrical schematics to consolidate multi-chip architectures, eliminate redundant components, and identify cost-effective alternatives to existing ICs.
• PCB Layout Optimization: Redesign PCB layouts to optimize board area, reduce layer counts where feasible, simplify routing, and minimize trace lengths while maintaining signal and power integrity (SI/PI).
• BOM & Component Engineering: Review component selections and identify pin-compatible replacements and alternative vendors. Support qualification of secondary sourcing options to lower costs and mitigate supply-chain risks.
• Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFM/DFA): Collaborate with manufacturing engineers and contract manufacturers to optimize panel layouts, reduce component placement counts, minimize test points, and streamline assembly.
• Prototyping & Bench Testing: Bring up, troubleshoot, and characterize cost-reduced hardware prototypes using equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, power analyzers, and thermal cameras.
• Compliance & Regression Validation: Coordinate and execute regression testing, including environmental, EMI/EMC, and safety testing, to ensure redesigned hardware maintains required regulatory certifications, including FCC, CE, and UL.
• Technical Documentation: Manage the Engineering Change Order (ECO) lifecycle, including updates to schematics, BOMs, Gerber files, and manufacturing documentation.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or a closely related discipline.
• 3+ years of hardware development experience , including experience with hardware cost-reduction projects or product redesigns.
• Strong proficiency with Cadence PCB design tools .
• Strong knowledge of electronic components, including passives, power-management ICs, discrete semiconductors, MCUs, and connectors .
• Solid understanding of PCB fabrication, surface-mount technology (SMT), and manufacturing/assembly processes .
• Understanding of how hardware design decisions impact assembly and testing costs, including ICT/FCT .
• Hands-on experience with soldering, prototyping, hardware debugging, and component-level troubleshooting .

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with thermal modeling and/or Signal Integrity/Power Integrity (SI/PI) simulation .
• Familiarity with should-cost modeling or parametric cost-benchmarking techniques .
• Basic understanding of embedded C firmware , particularly for supporting MCU or peripheral migration testing.
