Provisional to Permanent - Assistant Industrial Hygienist (6137) Full-time, Permanent Civil Service Under supervision, performs routine industrial hygiene work in connection with hazardous materials and other health and environmental hazards in the City and County of San Francisco. Responsibilities include conducting surveys, monitoring chemical, biological, and physical agents, maintaining equipment, supporting training programs, and providing technical assistance to departments. Responsibilities Conduct industrial hygiene surveys of city and county facilities to identify, evaluate, and recommend controls for hazardous agents. Investigate and evaluate health and safety hazards and advise relevant personnel for remedial action. Perform routine industrial hygiene monitoring of chemical, biological, and physical agents. Provide technical assistance to departments in establishing occupational safety and health programs. Assist in developing and conducting training programs on occupational health and safety topics. Advise departmental health and safety personnel on occupational health matters and coordinate implementation of applicable laws and regulations. Assist in administrative tasks related to enforcement of codes, maintain technical reference materials, compile data, and prepare reports. Participate in meetings concerning industrial hygiene and hazardous materials matters. Conduct respiratory protection fit‑testing. Eligibility & Qualifications Current provisional employee in Class 6137 who has worked at least 2,080 hours in Class 6137. Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Sciences, Health, or Management, or an equivalent degree from an accredited college or university. Undergraduate or master’s coursework must include a minimum of six semesters of chemistry, biology, and/or physics. Valid driver’s license; if not a California driver’s license, ability to obtain one within 45 days of hire. Substitution: Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, Health, Management, Occupational Safety & Health, or closely related majors, plus six months of exposure to industrial hygiene practice through an internship, trainee position, or technician role under the direction of an industrial hygienist.
