Job ID: 36370 Agency: Department of Corrections - Rapid City Minimum Center Location: Rapid City, SD Salary: $25.50 – $30.00 per hour, depending on experience Pay Grade: GG Closing Date: June 23, 2026 Responsibilities Maintain custody of men at the Rapid City Minimum Center by enforcing institutional operations memoranda and procedures to ensure the safety and security of inmates and employees. Observe inmates in cell halls, recreation areas, dining halls, school, health services, and shower rooms. Supervise inmates by assigning duties and monitoring work. Prepare reports of incidents and rule infractions. Conduct inmate counts and maintain log books. Escort and transport inmates to and from inside and outside appointments. Inspect and search cells, common areas, inmates, and visitors. Monitor and control gates and cell doors. Respond to crisis situations. Manag e an armed post and be responsible for annual firearms certification. Monitor facility perimeter and maintain a controlled movement schedule for offenders. Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts. Inspect the facility and cells to maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards. Inspect inmate mail. Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergency situations. Follow established tool and key control, ensuring proper storage and documentation. Attend shift briefings, document incidents using established reporting practices, and communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors. Qualifications With or without reasonable accommodations, successfully pass all modules of the South Dakota Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments, Defensive Tactics, and firearms/armed transport curriculum. Possess the physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics, including lifting arms above the head, performing controlled takedowns, delivering blows, and enduring impact. Be capable of working 12‑hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends, and operating in fluctuating noise and temperature environments. Demonstrate body agility, strength, and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently. Have reliable vision and hearing to observe and respond to security breaches. Have the ability to seize, hold, control, or subdue violent or assaultive persons. Show the aptitude to handle individuals with diverse moods, behaviors, and backgrounds. Be able to communicate orally and in writing, both verbally and in writing, in English. Apply correctional methods to prepare inmates for community reentry. Understand state statutes, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Prison Rape Elimination Act, and DOC administrative regulations. Be capable of conducting searches using various methods, operating security equipment, and using firearms, restraints, chemical agents, and tasers safely. Exercise independent judgment, follow chain of command, and respond quickly to emergencies such as fights, medical emergencies, fires, or escapes.
