About Conservation Nation Conservation Nation is a nonprofit in Washington D.C. focused on diversifying conservation by supporting underrepresented wildlife conservationists and delivering free in‑school environmental education. About the Managing Director Position This full‑time Managing Director reports to the CEO and oversees day‑to‑day operations, staff, programs, fundraising, communications, and strategic implementation. The role supports Education Programs, Conservationist Support, and Fundraising efforts. The Ideal Candidate Experienced in building education programs for middle and high schools. Has led and managed a team and operations. Shares a commitment to diversifying the conservation community. Strong in storytelling, marketing, communications, social media, and the organization’s web presence. Understands nonprofit financial management. Optimistic, enthusiastic, creative, and collaborative. Values partnerships and low‑ego teamwork. Resident of or willing to relocate to the Washington D.C. area. Job Responsibilities The Managing Director will ensure the following, in partnership with a supportive team. Operations and Human Resources Manage day‑to‑day operations, programs, fundraising, communications, and resources. Implement strategic and financial plans with senior stakeholders. Organize, motivate, and mentor team leaders to grow impact and fundraising. Ensure consistent progress toward mission, goals, and programmatic impact. Oversee HR processes: hiring, separation, staff development, performance management, compensation, and benefits. Identify and design solutions to operational problems with CEO guidance. Oversee the annual audit and Form 990 preparation and compliance. Program Oversight Support expansion and impact of education programs and resource allocation. Advance conservationist support goals and develop new programs based on funding. Culture Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and accountable workplace with the CEOs. Provide inclusive, transparent, and empowering leadership. Model commitment to valuing diverse perspectives and experiences. Development/Fundraising Develop and manage grants, individual gifts, sponsorships, and endowments. Raise funds for education, conservationist support, and operating expenses. Partner with CEO and co‑founders on fundraising opportunities. Maintain donor and prospect files across all donor categories. Lead appeals strategy with CEO/Co‑founders’ insights. Coordinate gift processing, acknowledgements, and communication for Advisory Council, Board, and Major Donors. Engage board and advisory council in fundraising. Coordinate consultants as needed. Assist in grant and contract proposal submissions, budgets, and reports. Marketing, Communications, Storytelling Drive strong marketing, communications, and storytelling to support growth. Optimize social media and website to grow engagement. Encourage frequent content development and distribution. Oversee creation of communication pieces for donors: brochures and annual report. Qualifications Conservation Nation welcomes diverse experience and recognises that not every candidate will have all the qualifications listed. Passion for the mission. Experience in education, curriculum development, and deployment in schools. Minimum five years in a leadership role. Record of effective operational leadership with efficient policies and procedures. Strong trust‑based relationships with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders. Excellent communication skills, building trust with diverse groups.
