Surgery Clerkship Director (Med Clinical Prof-Med Series)

Overview The CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY SOM), located on the campus of The City College of New York (CCNY), is the only medical school in the CUNY system. Its accelerated curriculum enables students to earn both a Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) in seven years; the inaugural MD class graduated in 2020. CUNY SOM also offers a two‑year Physician Assistant (PA) program. The school’s mission is twofold: (1) to provide medical and PA education to students from historically under‑represented backgrounds, with a commitment to primary care in underserved communities; and (2) to conduct innovative research in community health, health professions education, and biomedical science, translating findings into meaningful clinical impact. Responsibilities Develop, implement, and evaluate a standardized didactic curriculum in Surgery for third‑year medical students across all clinical sites. Lead interactive, student‑centered educational sessions, typically held one afternoon per week. Direct the simulation‑based end‑of‑clerkship OSCE at the NYSIM Center at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Ensure alignment of teaching with national curricular guidelines, as well as CUNY SOM Educational Program Objectives (EPOs), Foundational Competencies (FCs), and clerkship‑level learning objectives; chair Clerkship Grading Committee meetings, oversee the grading process, and provide feedback to clinical site directors on evaluation practices. Conduct periodic clinical site visits to ensure consistency and comparability of student experiences and assessment practices across locations. Supervise and oversee educational objectives for advanced clinical rotations, including the fourth‑year Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) rotation and surgical sub‑internships. Serve on institutional committees, such as the Curriculum Committee and Admissions Committee. Mentor students and serve as a faculty advisor to student organizations, including the Surgical Special Interest Group (SIG). Contribute to broader medical education by participating in courses such as Practice of Medicine (POM), Organ Systems (Gross Anatomy), Advanced Clinical Skills Assessment, and Introduction to Internship (ITI). Qualifications Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or MD/PhD degree; be board certified; and hold a current New York State physician’s license. Preferred Qualifications At least five (5) years of experience as a medical school course director, clerkship site director, residency director, or undergraduate medical educator, with an understanding of inclusive pedagogy as it relates to medical education. Experience collaborating with professionals in a complex organization. Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and experience with curriculum development. Ability to combine administrative, educational, and teaching responsibilities. Outstanding communication and leadership skills to work collaboratively with faculty from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds to develop and implement a new integrated curriculum. Demonstrated record of academic and scholarly activity. Experience in supporting student academic success, particularly for members of underrepresented groups. Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural and structural competence in an educational and work environment. Compensation Salary Range: $175,000 - $227,755. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
