What role you will play in our team

The Senior Advisor, State Government Relations will lead ExxonMobil's state government relations activities in Illinois and support strategic engagement across key Midwest states. This role is responsible for advancing the company's public policy, legislative, and regulatory priorities while building and maintaining trusted relationships with policymakers, regulators, industry associations, and other influential stakeholders.


The successful candidate will serve as a strategic advisor to the business, identifying emerging legislative and regulatory developments, assessing risks and opportunities, and developing advocacy strategies that support ExxonMobil's business objectives. Working closely with colleagues across the State Government Relations organization and other internal functions, the Senior Advisor will help shape and execute integrated policy and stakeholder engagement strategies throughout the region.


This position is based in Illinois.

What you will do

• Lead ExxonMobil's state government relations strategy in Illinois and support advocacy efforts across the Midwest region.
• Develop, maintain, and leverage a strong network of relationships with elected officials, regulators, legislative staff, trade associations, business organizations, and other key stakeholders to advance company priorities.
• Represent ExxonMobil in direct engagement with policymakers and regulatory officials, while coordinating advocacy efforts through trade associations, coalitions, and other third-party partners.
• Monitor, analyze, and influence legislative, regulatory, and political developments that may impact ExxonMobil's business, operations, or reputation.
• Advise business leaders on emerging policy trends, opportunities, and risks, and develop strategies to address priority issues.
• Partner closely with State Government Relations colleagues and cross-functional teams to develop and execute coordinated policy, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement strategies.
• Lead issue advocacy campaigns, including the development of policy positions, strategic communications, stakeholder outreach plans, and coalition-building efforts.
• Support the development and execution of initiatives designed to strengthen ExxonMobil's reputation and influence among key external audiences across the region.
• Ensure effective issue management and the consistent execution of advocacy strategies across priority policy initiatives.

About you

The successful candidate is a highly effective government relations professional with a proven ability to develop and execute advocacy strategies, influence policy outcomes, and build strong relationships with senior policymakers and stakeholders. They bring a hands-on leadership style, sound judgment, and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic and politically complex environment.

Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in public policy, law, political science, business, or a related field preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience engaging with state policymakers, government officials, or regulatory agencies, preferably in government relations, public affairs, public policy, or a related field.
• Demonstrated success developing and executing legislative, regulatory, and stakeholder engagement strategies that advance organizational objectives.
• Strong understanding of state legislative and regulatory processes, particularly within Illinois and the Midwest region.
• Exceptional relationship-building skills, with a reputation for integrity, credibility, sound judgment, and consistent follow-through.
• Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex policy and business issues into clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
• Strong strategic thinking and analytical capabilities, including the ability to anticipate policy developments and identify emerging opportunities and risks.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while delivering high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
• Highly collaborative and effective at influencing across functions, organizations, and stakeholder groups.
• Experience representing organizations before legislative bodies, regulatory agencies, industry forums, and external stakeholder groups.
• Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
