1.0 FTE Full time Day - 10 Hour R2658141 Hybrid 107088001 Neurology Clinic SNHC Other PALO ALTO, 213 Quarry Rd, California Day - 10 Hour (United States of America) Position: Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – Neurology, Autonomic Disorders Location: Stanford Health Care Overview The APP role in Neurology, Autonomic Disorders supports the autonomic neuroscience subspecialty under the supervision of a Neurology attending physician. The APP delivers high-quality, patient-centered care for adults with acute and chronic autonomic symptoms and disorders (e.g., postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, neurocardiogenic syncope, orthostatic hypotension, diabetic autonomic neuropathy, and related conditions). Care is delivered within standardized procedures and protocols approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC) and aligned with hospital governance, quality, and safety standards. The APP collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to optimize diagnostic evaluation, treatment, education, and care coordination across inpatient and outpatient settings. What You Will Do Provide care only for autonomic patients within the APP’s scope of competence, education, training, and experience, under the supervision of a Neurology attending who remains responsible for the patient’s overall care. Consult with or refer to a collaborating physician when tasks or decisions exceed current level of competence. Evaluate and manage patients with acute and chronic autonomic complaints and health maintenance concerns per standardized procedures. Take comprehensive histories and perform targeted physical examinations; document findings and develop assessment and management plans for new and returning patients. Order, interpret, and coordinate diagnostic studies appropriate to autonomic disorders (e.g., autonomic function testing, laboratory studies, imaging) in line with formal clinical protocols. Administer, order, furnish, and prescribe medications according to approved formulary/protocols; monitor responses, adverse effects, and interactions; initiate non-pharmacologic therapies as indicated. Coordinate laboratory testing, imaging, autonomic testing, rehabilitation therapies, and other services (e.g., physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy) as clinically appropriate. Perform designated procedures after documented competency and in accordance with protocols relevant to autonomic care. Obtain informed consent when required and participate in shared decision-making with patients and families. Enroll eligible patients in IRB-approved research studies as directed by the supervising physician; order tests and medications for trial participation as appropriate; comply with regulatory requirements for off-label use per patient-specific orders. Assist with inpatient admissions and discharges as directed; coordinate transitions of care to ensure seamless outpatient follow-up. Recognize age-specific needs and implement appropriate, sensitive communication and care planning for diverse patient populations. Provide clear, compassionate communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams; advocate for patients and coordinate with community resources as needed. Promote safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice; participate in performance improvement initiatives and clinical protocol updates. Deliver patient education and counseling; reinforce self-management strategies and adherence to treatment plans. Other duties as assigned within scope of practice and under supervision. Education Qualifications Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing (APN) or a graduate degree from an accredited physician assistant program. For APNs: graduation from a program accredited by NLNAC or CCNE; for PAs: graduation from an ARC-PA–accredited program. Current credentialing to practice as an APP in the State of California (or applicable state licensure); appropriate board certification in specialty area (e.g., Neurology APN/PA certification or equivalent) as applicable. Licenses and Certifications State licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) or Physician Assistant (PA) and any required state practice privileges. National board certification for the APP discipline (e.g., ANCC, AANP for NPs; NCCPA for PAs) with ongoing recertification. Prescriptive authority appropriate to role (e.g., DEA registration; prescriptive authority under state law and institutional policy). Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required by site and role. Other certifications as required by the neurologic/autonomic clinic or hospital policies. Specialized Autonomic Neurology Focus Autonomic syndrome evaluation, dysautonomia workups, reflex testing coordination, tilt-table test oversight and interpretation in collaboration with neurologic autonomic testing services. Management of chronic autonomic disorders with emphasis on symptom control, disease modification where appropriate, and coordinated multimodal therapy. Integration of lifestyle modification counseling, rehabilitation referrals, and patient self-management strategies into care plans. Work Environment Location: Stanford Health Care Collaboration with Neurology, Autonomic Disorders Clinic, inpatient units, and related specialty services. Compliance with all hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and clinical governance structures. Note All APPs must practice within their scope, maintain competency through ongoing education, and follow standardized procedures and formulary protocols. A Brief Overview The Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions under this Nurse Practitioner Job Description approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC). An NP may provide only those medical services which he/she is competent to perform, which are consistent with the NP’s education, training and experience, and which are performed under the supervision of a physician who is responsible for the patients cared for by that NP. B. An NP shall consult with a physician regarding any task, procedure or diagnostic problem which the NP determines exceeds his/her level of competence or shall refer such cases to a collaborating physician. C. Scope of Practice of the NP: Evaluates and treats patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty, according to written standardized procedures. [see Appendix A: Assessment & Management of Patients] Obtains complete histories and performs pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new and return patients, according to written standardized procedures. [see Appendix A Assessment & Management of Patients] Performs or requests and evaluates diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient, according to written standardized procedures. [see Appendix A: Assessment & Management of Patients] Administers, orders, furnishes and prescribes medications, according to written standardized procedures. [see Appendix B : Administering, Ordering, Furnishing or Prescribing of Drugs; Formulary Protocol] Orders and collects specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products. Orders physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services. Performs designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable. Obtains informed consent, as indicated. Initiates arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and completes appropriate paperwork. As directed by the supervising physician, enrolls patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and orders the necessary tests and medications. [see Appendix B: Administering, Ordering, Furnishing or Prescribing of Drugs; Formulary Protocol] Medications that are not FDA-approved or are used for a non‑FDA-approved indication (off‑label use) require a patient‑specific order in advance from the supervising physician. After appropriate training, assists the supervising physician in the operating room. The RN First Assistant directly assists the surgeon and practices under the supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase. The RN First Assistant must adhere to standardized procedures and not concurrently function as a scrub nurse. Recognizes and considers age‑specific needs of patients. Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds. Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life‑saving procedures when necessary. Facilitates the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed. Facilitates collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources. Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures. Participates in quality improvement initiatives. Provides and coordinates patient teaching and counseling. Other duties as assigned. Education Qualifications Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited college or university. (Note: NPs hired prior to March 1, 2012 are not subject to this educational requirement.) Graduate of an NP program accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
