TITLE: Safe Passage Worker

POSITION STATUS: Non-Exempt, Part-Time

Schedule: Safe Passage Part-Time Positions

In-School Hours:

• Monday (4 hours) 8:30 am - 10:30 am & 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm.
• Tuesday (4 hours) 8:30 am - 10:30 am & 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm.
• Wednesday (4 hours) 8:30 am - 10:30 am & 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm.
• Thursday (4 hours) 8:30 am - 10:30 am & 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm.
• Friday (4 hours) 8:30 am - 10:30 am & 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm.

Out-of-School Hours:

• Monday (4 hours) 9:30 am - 1:30 pm.
• Tuesday (4 hours) 9:30 am - 1:30 pm.
• Wednesday (4 hours) 9:30 am - 1:30 pm.
• Thursday (4 hours) 9:30 am - 1:30 pm.
• Friday (4 hours) 9:30 am - 1:30 pm.

Summer SNL Hours:

• Start Date and End Date TBD: usual start time is 5:00 pm.

Join ACE as a Safe Passage Worker and make a direct impact in the lives of individuals and families needing critical support. The Safe Passage Initiative will focus on implementing Safe Passage services near selected middle and high schools, introducing the Safe Haven Initiative in partnership with community stakeholders, local businesses, and supporting high-risk students.

In this role, you’ll provide safe passage to ensure the safety and well-being of students as they travel to and from school. Your responsibilities will include peacemaking, incident response, and connecting participants with essential resources in the community. As a liaison, you’ll foster collaboration and build bridges within the community, helping to create safer and more supportive environments for those in need.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide a visible presence before school (arrival times) and after school (dismissal times) along designated Safe Passage routes.
• Conduct proactive outreach and engagement with students to promote safety and offer support or referrals when needed.
• Build relationships with students and their families to promote trust and reduce vulnerability to gang recruitment, bullying, or violence.
• Engage with local businesses along Safe Passage routes to identify safe spaces and strengthen community partnerships.
• Support school administration and Community Violence Intervention Workers with on-campus presence as needed to de-escalate tensions and ensure smooth student transitions.
• Co-create plans with students, families, and school staff to offer mentorship, counseling, and wraparound intervention support.
• Maintain regular coordination with school counselors and administrators to track progress and adjust plans.
• Offer in-school workshops on personal safety, navigating peer pressure, and when/how to seek help.
• Participate in weekly Safe Passage team meetings to discuss route coverage updates, safety concerns, success stories, impact highlights, and needed adjustments.
• Share information with partners regarding safety concerns and areas requiring enhanced coverage or support.
• Maintain awareness of community tensions, conflicts, or potential safety threats, and report immediately to the site supervisor.
• Participate in all Intervention events and facilitate workshops, including Summer Night Lights.
• Reduce gang violence by implementing strategies such as reducing tensions, developing peace treaties, rumor control, community canvassing, conflict resolution, intervention services, and holding pro-social activities/events in and around school campuses.
• Foster positive relationships with community members, partner organizations, and local gangs.
• Participate in cultural and community-building activities/events.
• Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of community/gang dynamics within the West San Fernando Valley.
• Ability to operate within ACE's CVI service area, West San Fernando Valley, which may require exposure to gang activity.
• Ability to work in assigned locations and during situations of high emotional distress.
• Possesses necessary de-escalation skills to provide crisis and community violence intervention in schools and the community.
• Recognizes appropriate boundaries and limitations on interactions with participants and their families, maintaining professional standards and practices.
• Is sensitive to community, cultural, and personal dignity of program participants, students, and families; able to successfully engage, assess, and plan services typical of the program’s target population.
• Ability to assess conditions and responsiveness to interventions.
• Familiar with standard approaches to accurate participant recordkeeping, including timely charting, notation formats, content limitations, and confidentiality practices.
• Possesses knowledge of programs, regulations, and procedures regarding human services, social services, justice, and workforce development.
• General proficiency in navigating and using technology.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout facilities and community.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• Must be able to bend, lift, stretch, climb, and crawl to provide services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or equivalent community intervention experience.
• Lived experience with the criminal justice system, community violence, or the conditions that contribute to violence (e.g., housing instability, substance use, gang involvement) is a plus.
• Formal gang intervention training (e.g. LAVITA)  preferred.
• Strong License to Operate in the community.
• Spanish language skills, verbal and written preferred.
• Possess a current California Driver’s License, clean DMV record & adequate auto insurance on a reliable vehicle available to use for work purposes.
• Must submit to a Department of Justice Criminal background check.
• Initial TB employment clearance required.

The anticipated pay for candidates who will work in California is $28.85 to $30.45 hourly.  The offered pay to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to years of experience within the job, years of experience within the required industry, education, etc.
